    Mr. Donald Gene Martin, age 77, a resident of Chocowinity, NC, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at his home.

    Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2012, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington, NC, and will be conducted by the Rev. Shelby Squires. The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the home.

    Mr. Martin was born December 19, 1934, in Pocatello, Idaho, to the late Mel and LaClo Martin. He was a 1953 graduate of Pocatello High School and a 1965 graduate of Idaho State University where he received a MS in Microbiology and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. On May 25, 1957, he married Carol Anne Collier who preceded him in death on December 27, 1995. He later married Annie Craft on July 11, 1998. Don served his country in the United States Navy from 1953 until retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1982. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

    Don was a real outdoorsman; he loved hunting, fishing and boating. He was an officer in the Virginia Beach Power Squadron. He also enjoyed building radio controlled airplanes and rebuilding radios from the 1930s and 1940s. After his retirement from the Navy, Don was head of the Microbiology Laboratory at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Virginia. He also had his own home improvement business. His wry sense of humor and devotion to his family will be greatly missed.

    Survivors include his wife of the home, Annie C. Martin, one daughter, Karen Martin Peppers of Merritt Island, Florida, one son, Donald Colin Martin of Virginia Beach, Virginia, two stepdaughters, Morgan Cable of Scottsdale, Arizona, Shannon Cable of Greenville, North Carolina, grandchildren, Amanda Peppers of Arlington, Texas, Cody Martin of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and Andrew Peppers of Merritt Island, Florida.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Patty McAlister and Amanda Grooms for the love and care they shared with Don.

    In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Community Home Care and Hospice, 814 Washington Plaza, Washington, NC 27889.
