Mrs. Melbia Harris Smith, age 78, a resident of Washington, NC, died Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

A memorial service will be held 1 PM Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington officiated by Doug Herrin.

Mrs. Smith was born in Northampton County on July 3, 1934, daughter of the late Robert “Jack” and Nellie Herrin Harris. She was a graduate of Hardbarger Business College in Raleigh. On August 23, 1974, she married Cooper Smith, Jr., who preceded her in death on September 23, 1996. Mrs. Smith was an executive assistant with Annapolis Housing Authority. Upon moving to Beaufort County she worked as a front desk associate at Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn. She also worked with Seacorp, which was contracted to manage the homeowners association and the marina at Cypress Landing until the residents of the community were able to establish the current association. Mrs. Smith was a naturalist who loved the ocean and environment. Her love for nature and the water is what drew her to Beaufort County. Any trips taking Mrs. Smith close to the ocean were not complete without a walk on the beach. She was a member of the Waterfowl Guild and was active with Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter: Dawn M. Plaster and her husband Bill of Washington; two sons: Brian Tyler Mylott and his wife Vicky of Centreville, MD, and Brent William Mylott and his wife Ruth of Kent Island, MD; a daughter-in-law: Sue Randolph Mylott of Hartly, DE; eight grandchildren: Savannah Mylott, Felicia Mylott, Brandon Mylott, Sarah Mylott, Rory Mylott, Cooper Mylott, Tyler Mylott and William L. Plaster, Jr. and a great-granddaughter: Brianna Mylott. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a son: Bradford Lee Mylott.

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests for memorials to be made to the Ocean Conservatory, 1300 19th St. NW, Washington, DC 20036.

Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington is honored to serve the Smith family.
