Candidates for North Carolina Council of State Show up in Wayne County for Forum | Eastern North Carolina Now

On October 13, Linda Harper and the Citizens for Constitutional Liberties (Wayne County Tea Party) hosted a forum in Goldsboro to allow candidates for state offices to present their ideas for improving the state of North Carolina. If all of the candidates could be graded on character and likability, they would all receive "A, s." But they were more than that, they all had good solid ideas about how to stop our mad stampede towards physical and financial destruction and reverse the damage that is being done to our state.

Pat McCroy could not attend, but Vernon Robinson substituted for him and presented the aspiring governor's view of a renewed NC. Also, Dan Forest had other commitments, but Karen Kozel more than made up for his absence. Her personal relationship with Mr. Forest, and their mutually shared vision of a new reenergized state government set the tone for the candidates to follow.

By now, I think that most state voters are familiar with Pat McCrory who is running for governor and Dan Forest who is running for Lt. Governor, so allow me to focus on some of the candidates who are not as well known. Steve Royal is running for State Treasurer. He was the controller/owner and accountant of a large corporation, but when the furniture business changed in the early 80's, he became a CPA. He has held positions with the state government, and he has seen first hand how big money is destroying the political process. The position of the N.C. state treasurer is being used as a "milking machine" to fund the office holders' political coffers with hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is known as the Pay-to-Play scheme because of the vast amounts of money coming from large law firms, financial interests, and banks. Mr. Royal's motto will be, "Absolutely no Pay-to-Play." And no more games with the pension fund's financial reports. The last report failed to show $771 million on securities realized but now shown. The last report excluded $5 billion in questionable mortgage securities that was not disclosed. We must protect the state's pension fund with a full independent audit.

Janet Cowell (D) is the current state treasurer. N.C. is $3 billion in debt to the federal government for over drawing from the unemployment fund. That debt grows $25 million each and every week. The pension fund is underfunded by $663 million.

Janet Cowell has control of $7 billion of state funds, and yet she has never presented a full resume. Her financial experience was two entry level jobs. There is no record of investment licenses or professional qualifications. She earned a MBA in 1995, but there is no record of any employment since in the financial field. She said that she worked overseas, but the only thing that can be found was 1 year in Europe during high schools as a foreign exchange student.

There is no record of her firm, Cowell & Associates, being registered with the N.C. secretary of state.

When one looks at her background any normal person would question why she was placed in a position of trust over $7 billion dollars. And one has to question what would justify a person with a salary of $123,198 to attract funds for her re-election in the amount of $1,863,113. $782,507 was raised from out of state law firms and banks. Janet Crowell ranks third in the entire U.S. for fund raisers.

Please vote for Steve Royal for State Treasurer and help Pat McCrory clean up the mess in Raleigh. The Democrats have been in control too long. At least give the Republicans a chance.

John Tedesco is the candidate for State Superintendent. And if there was every a man touched by the finger of God to fill an earthly position, it is John Tedesco. Repairing our broken school system is his mission, and he has a plan to put it back on track and made it better than it was in the past. As we listened to his mission statement, we all felt, YES, it can be done. Bureaucrats and failed political agendas have controlled North Carolina's education system for far too long. Imagine an education system built around our children, empowering families, supporting teachers and working with taxpayers.

Businesses can not expand if they don't have educated workers, so Mr. Tedesco advocates expanding vocational programs, apprenticeships and early college opportunities. Reduce the need for remediation for out students who do go to college. Trim wasteful spending and bureaucracy. Use those resources to protect our teachers and classrooms locally. Expand merit-based pay opportunities and keep our most effective teachers in the classrooms not just the tenured teachers.

We must return to the basics. Let's make sure our children can read, write, and perform math. End social promotions that just push kids through. Ensure that all of our classrooms are 21st century ready across North Carolina. Empower Parents and Communities. We need to increase local controls, expand parental choice, and build on our American cultural values. Promote expanded civic and service based learning.

We can not continue on the failed policies of the past. Every year, we have seen our test scores sink lower and lower. If we continue doing the same thing and listening to the experts over and over and expect different results, then maybe the adults should go back to school, sit at a desk, and listen to the social propaganda that the federal government and the unions are forcing the students to endure.

I don't know who the current State Superintendent is or who is running against John Tedesco, if you do not elect this man, you will make a big mistake. It will be a mistake that will have far reaching consequences now and in the future.

Mike Causey is the candidate for Insurance Commissioner. He has 30 years experience in the insurance industry and he knows how it operates and what the flaws are. The insurance commissioner is responsible for other areas besides insurance. For example:

The insurance commissioner is the state fire marshal including, engineering and codes, manufactured buildings, risk management, fire and rescue training, fire presentation and grants. He/she is also responsible for bail bonds, clubs like AAA, senior health and retirement homes.

Mr. Causey would also reduce insurance premiums for state equipment by eliminating no bid contracts, and he would make sure that NC insurance companies got the business instead of out of state companies.

The way the game has been played in the past is the insurance company would get together and come up with a rate increase, then, they would take it to the commissioner, and the companies would come down a penny or two. The insurance companies would get what they wanted in the first place the commission would say, "Look what I did for you." There will be no more games. And the state of North Carolina will be opened to outside insurance company which will allow competition and cheaper rates.

Mr. Causey will also make the office of insurance more user friendly. He will have live people answering the phones instead of the series of the annoying electronic transfers. Mr. Causey comes across as a nice man who wants to make a difference in his state.

Ed Goodwin is the candidate for the Secretary of State. He has a military background and law enforcement. He has put his life on the line to protect our freedoms, and now he wants to protect our business freedom. He knows that our business climate has become unfriendly due to excessive regulations and high taxes. The Secretary of State is vital to the growth of North Carolina. When he is elected, he promises to go to every county and ask the businessmen/women what they need to get businesses going again. And he will work with them, not against them. The current Secretary of State is Elaine Marshal. She is anti-business and solidly against voter ID. It is outside the scope of the Secretary of State to interfere with areas that belong to the legislative and executive branch.

Ms. Marshal insists that the voter ID is not necessary and there is no voter fraud in NC, and she went on to say that if there is any fraud it is being done by the people who want voter ID to push their agenda. We have to show ID for everything from doctor's visits to being allowed to enter the DNC convention, so why is voter ID different. What are the Democrats trying to cover up? Since the majority of the voters in NC want voter ID, it would be better to have some one on side like Ed Goodwin instead of Elaine Marshal.

Debra Goldman is the candidate for State Auditor. Ms, Goldman has met and conquered many challenges in her young life, and now she is taking on a new challenge which is an uphill fight against an entrenched opponent. Debra will be a fiscal watchdog revolutionizing the way the state does business. Taxpayers have lost faith in their state government due to scandals and mismanagement. Her goals are true business leadership in the office of State Auditor.

Fiscal responsibility restored to state government. A truly independent auditor who will fairly investigate fraud, waste, and abuse. The elimination of corruption and cronyism.

After the election in November, when Governor Pat McCrory and Lt, Governor Dan Forest assume their positions in Raleigh, they will l need all of their teams in place to help them in turning our debt ridden scandal plagued state government around. Please make sure that Debra, Steve, Ed, John, and Mike are there with them.
