Populist nationalist PM Viktor Orban wins landslide reelection in Hungary | Eastern NC Now

trounces 6 party opposition coalition by almost 20 points

ENCNow

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has won a fourth term as his Fidesz Party won a landslide victory in Hungary's parliamentary election.  With most votes counted, Fidesz is projected to win 135 of the 199 seats in parliament, a gain of 2.  It will continue to hold a Constitutional majority allowing the party to amend the Constitution at will.  FIdesz ran about 4 points better than in its previous victory.  Orban is a committed nationalist known for his staunch opposition to illegal immigration and opposition to attempts of the EU to gain more power over its member nations.

FIdesz crushed a coalition of six major opposition parties from across the political spectrum ranging from the neo-fascist Jobbik Party to the Hungarian Greens, which ran as "United for Hungary" by almost a 20 point margin.  The coalition's leader and candidate for prime minister lost his own seat to a Fidesz challenger.  The coalition won 57 seats but is expected to fragment into its component parties which have little in common except their opposition to Orban.  Jobbik was by far the largest of the parties in the coalition.

The only other party to win seats was the new Our Homeland Movement, a populist / nationalist party to the right of Fidesz, which won 7 seats.  A total of 14 parties or coalitions contested the election.

Europe needs more Viktor Orbans and fewer Merkels and Macrons. Come to think about it, we desperately need an Orban here in the US.
