Czech Republic sends Ukraine tanks and armored personnel carriers | Eastern NC Now

The Czech Republic is sending Ukraine a shipment of heavy weapons including 12 T-72 tanks, armored personnel carriers, and self propelled howitzers.  The equipment was Soviet made and the Czech Republic had it in storage.  The equipment was shipped by rail through Slovakia, which borders Ukraine.  The shipment was partially paid for by private citizens through crowdfunding.

Poland has also said it is sending T-72 tanks to Ukraine.

The Czech Republic sending tanks to protect Ukraine's freedom is a reminder of the Prague Spring of 1968 when Soviet tanks rolled into Prague to crush Czecholoslovakia's experiment with democracy.

Considering the success that a single Ukrainian T-64 tank had in an ambush of an entire Russian armored column, I suspect Ukraine will make good use of the T-72s.  The T-64 is an older model last made in the 1960s.  The T-72 range is the current Russian range of tanks but was first introduced in the Soviet period.  In the ambush, a well positioned single T-64 destroyed multiple Russian armored vehicles before additional artillery assets arrived to add to t he destruction of the Russian column.
