    Carolyn Virginia Clayton passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Cross Creek Health Care Center Facility in Swan Quarter, N.C.

    She was born on January 22, 1926, to Patrick Columbus Simmons and Ina Spencer Simmons of Fairfield, N.C.

    She worked in Virginia until her retirement as a payroll clerk for longshoremen at Old Dominion Stevedoring and later, Ryan Walsh.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the family plot in Fairfield Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends at the Fairfield United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Clayton, Jr., her grandson, James Vincent Carlo, and seven brothers and sisters, all of whom were most beloved by her.

She is survived in death by her only child, Morna W. Owens and husband, Peppy and grandson Jeffrey J. Clayton (Helen); great-grandsons Robert J. Hamilton (Felicia), Richard A. Carlo (Tori) and James Vincent Carlo, Jr. and great-granddaughter, Annabelle Clayton; also by great-great-grandchildren, R.J. Hamilton and Alexis F. Hamilton. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Lou Simmons, Gaynel Simmons and Lois Simmons. Cherishing her memory are a host of nieces and nephews as well as great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

    She will be remembered fondly by many friends and co-workers including Fran Tolbert (Bill), Arlene Smith (Calvin) and Frances Shaver, as well as close friends in the Fairfield community. Her greatest delight in life was making crafts for special occasions such as the holidays and for events for friends and family in Virginia and Hyde County, N.C.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Charles Boyette and to the nurses and staff at Cross Creek, particularly Emma C. Williams and Bridgette S. Gibbs, as well as all the hospice workers, for their tender loving care.
