A new poll of the Finnish people has found that 62% say they would take up arms to defend their country if it were invaded while 12% said they would not.  This comes as Russian dictator Putin threatens Finland and Sweden over their applications to join NATO.  Another poll found that 80% of Finns support their government's application to join NATO.

Finland and the Soviet Union fought a war in the 20th century when Stalin invaded to try to take over the country in what became known as the Winter War of 1939-1940, sending a million Soviet soldiers into Finland.  The Finns fought back tenaciously, killing over 125,000 Soviet soldiers, five times Finland's own losses.  Facing thousands of Soviet tanks with less than a hundred themselves, the Finns devised methods to stop Soviet armor.  One of their inventions was the Molotov cocktail, named after the Soviet foreign minister.  The Soviets lost 3,500 tanks in the invasion, as well as 500 aircraft. A Finnish sniper who went by the nom de guerre "White Death" from his trademark hooded white snowsuit was the most prolific sniper in military history, sniping 505 Soviet officers and men.
