If warnings by grid operators of blackouts this summer across the US are correct, Americans may be about to learn the consequences of the Green New Deal on both the cost and reliability of electric power. The grid operators are pointing out that electric generation capacity is down due to the climate alarmists demanding shuttering of coal and gas power plants in their insane war on fossil fuels.

North Carolina's establishment Republicans are part of the problem. They rammed through North Carolina's Green New Deal, HB951, to shutter coal fired electric power plants in our state. Phil Berger and Jim Perry were both key players in that travesty, pushing left wing policy championed by Roy Cooper and Joe Biden.

UPDATE: Reuters is now reporting likely rotating blackouts in the central United States this summer, citing closures of coal and nuclear plants and the probability of poor wind conditions.

Depending on wind and solar for a higher generation capacity also creates a blackout risk because both wind and solar are intermittent producers of electricity. At night, when it is cloudy or foggy or panels are covered with dew or ice or show, solar does not produce. If the wind is not blowing or is blowing too hard, then wind does not produce. Europe found this out with a months-long period of very light winds last summer, wrecking havoc with wind power production. An Australian state had a statewide blackout when strong spring storms caused wind turbines to automatically shut down, causing a cascade effect across the grid.
