Spanish right trounces left in most populous province, long a left stronghold | Eastern NC Now

traditional right more than doubles seats, populist right also gains

ENCNow

Andalucia is Spain's most populous province and had long been a stronghold of the country's left wing parties.  Sunday's election saw a massive gain by the parties of the right, expanding on their narrow victory in the previous election which had seen a coalition of the traditional right Popular Party, the populist / nationalist anti-immigration right Vox Party and the center-right Citizens Party elected for the right's first victory there since the death of Franco.

Sunday saw the Popular Party more than double its seats to win an absolute majority in the provincial parliament while Vox also gained seats.  Of the 109 overall seats, the Popular Party won 58 while Vox won 14.  The nationally governing Socialists lost three seats, and a local affiliate of the far left Podemos Party called Adalante Andalusia lost 10 of the 12 seats it had going into the election.  The Citizens Party lost all of its seats, mostly to the Popular Party.

This election was considered a bellweather for the national election expected next year, and polls are already showing that a combination of the Popular Party and Vox are likely to win that.
