Sheriff candidate Dixon releases statement and biography | Eastern North Carolina Now

The campaign to elect Donald Dixon as Beaufort County Sheriff released a statement today, aiming to familiarize voters with Dixon's platform, as well as his background. Dixon is the Republican candidate running against current Beaufort County Sheriff Alan Jordan, who is on the ballot as a Democrat. Jordan was contacted by Beaufort County Now three weeks ago and given the same opportunity to reach voters. He assured Beaufort County Now that he planned to e-mail a statement; however, as of today, it has not been received. In light of the roughly 37,000 hits Beaufort County Now is attracting per day, we expect that Jordan will follow through, and we will post his statement at that time.

Dixon's statement is being posted uncut and unedited.

Donald Dixon's Candidate Statement:

I have been honored to serve the people in Beaufort County in many areas of life. As a businessman, I have learned several lessons that should be applied to government, primarily in the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Any wasted asset is wasted money. It doesn't matter if we're talking about a budget or any available resource. Waste takes money away from the tax payers. The citizens of Beaufort County deserve better from their elected officials.

Second, people are assets. The longer a person works in a position the more valuable they become. It is to our advantage to retain patrol officers and investigators. Deputies that leave the Sheriff's Office do so due to mismanagement of that resource.

I will work FOR the citizens of Beaufort County. If you call for assistance, you will be greeted by a Deputy, Investigator, or the Sheriff - you will not get a letter in the mail giving you excuses or passing blame. I will protect the resources at my disposal to assure they are not wasted. It is my goal to improve the quality of living and overall safety of our homes and families in Beaufort County.

I will cut spending in the budget and increase the patrol manpower by at least one more officer per shift AT NO ADDITIONAL COST to the tax payers of Beaufort Country. This will provide better county coverage, better officer support, and in return safer citizens, families, and deputies.

Crime prevention will be a key focus for me as your Sheriff. Beaufort County has seen an increase in the trend of violent crime every year over the past 12 years, with a marked increase over the last 6 years. I pledge to focus on crime reduction and doing the job charged to the Sheriff of this county. We will not only solve crime but WE WILL REDUCE CRIME.

The bottom line, 12 years with the present Sheriff administration has not worked - regardless to the "smoke and mirrors" that you will see used this election. Property crime is high and not coming down, violent crime has increased yearly, and deputies will not stay on the job. There are hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted, or misused, yearly while casting blame somewhere else for the job not being done.

To gauge how bad we've gotten, if the current trend of violent crime in Beaufort County does not change - in three years we will be higher than Pitt County in Violent Crime per 100K citizens. That should shake people up! Pitt County has 4 times more people per square mile compared to Beaufort County; our violent crime rate should not be close to theirs!

Good news, there is a silver lining. The majority of these problems can be fixed on Nov. 2nd. I would like to thank you in advance for your consideration and your vote. With your help, and the help of the brave men and women that will serve beside me, the county commissioners, and other law enforcement working within our county, we can turn the crime rate in this county around and fix the costly problems at the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Again, my name is Donald Dixon, and I thank you for your vote.

Candidate Biography:

Donald Dixon has always lived in Beaufort County, so naturally roots here run deep, this is home. Dixon's two daughters were born and raised here, everyone in the family went to Washington High School, and this is where Dixon worked and attended church. Not all memories here are happy; Dixon's father, Donald (Duck) Dixon Sr, and grandparents are buried in Washington cemeteries. Donald Dixon's life is embedded in Beaufort County and because of this, the future of our county is important to him.

Through the years Donald has volunteered in a variety of capacities throughout the community, including as a fire fighter/EMT-I. Currently, Dixon aids the blind and vision impaired with the Lions Club and donating to the Salvation Army and area churches whenever possible. As a local businessman, Dixon has given to those in need through both local groups and on individual basis.

Donald Dixon worked as Service Manager in the family business until 1988, at which time he started his own company. At nearly 23 years in business, Dixon has learned how to manage employees, subcontractors, schedules, budgets, and government regulations. Business, unlike government, must stay within budgetary restraints; a lesson quickly learned is how to get the most for your money. Far too often, those in government forget that the money they throw around is TAX DOLLARS; the Sheriff's Office should be managed with that in mind.

Donald Dixon began his law enforcement career at the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Sheppard. Starting as a patrol officer, Dixon quickly advanced to acting sergeant and then corporal. Duties included Field Training Officer, Drug K-9 Handler, and School Resource Officer at Northside High School. Dixon parted from the Sheriff's Office in 2003 to obtain N.C. private investigator license from Raleigh.

Over the past 7 years Dixon has worked under the trade name Pirate Investigation in the State, being hired by corporations, attorneys, and private individuals. Cases have ranged from child custody, alcohol and drug offenses, infidelity cases, civil cases, and paper service. Dixon has been called into court to testify in criminal and civil matters. Donald Dixon is an active member of the NC Association of Private Investigators.

Donald Dixon was awarded the endorsement of the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association. This watchdog group is made up of law enforcement officers from throughout the state. The PBA represents law enforcement by providing legal services to members and advocating policy changes to improve the conditions and treatment for people employed in all aspects of criminal justice. Being endorsed by the PBA is an honor; it shows that Donald Dixon has the backing of the law enforcement community and of those watching for fairness in the agency workplace.
