Italian right wins big in key regional elections | Eastern North Carolina Now

first electoral test of new conservative national government

ENCNow

Exit polls are showing a big win in key Italian regional elections for Italy's new conservative national government.  Italy's regional elections are staggered at different times instead of all held at once, and the two voting this time were two of the most important, Lombardy that includes the economic hub of Milan and Lazio that includes the capital of Rome.  Together, they account for a quarter of Italy's population.

With Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's ultra conservative Brothers of Italy leading the way and top vote getter, her coalition that includes the populist / nationalist anti-immigration League of Mateo Salvini and the traditional conservative Forza Italia of Silvio Berlusconi increased their majority in Lombardy, and captured the former leftwing stronghold of Lazio for the first time in years.  The biggest loser was the populist Five Star Movement whose platform is a mish-mash of positions on both the right and left.  Two thirds of former Five Star voters have shifted to parties of the right and only a third of their former voters stuck with Five Star.

Immigration issues are what power the right in Italy. That picture shows a key to conservative success. Italy has honest elections because they vote with paper ballots, not the corruptable voting machines.
