Belgium latest EU country with big surge for populist / nationalist right | Eastern NC Now

if election held today, it would likely elect a right wing government

ENCNow

Nations across Europe are seeing a massive surge in support for parties of the populist / nationalist right.  It is showing up in elections and in polls in country after country, and the latest is the Kingdom of Belgium.  Indeed, polls indiciate that if the election were held today, a government of parties of the right could be formed in Belgium.

Belgian politics are divided on cultural as well as ideological lines, with the French speaking  Walloons of Walloonia, and the Dutch speaking Flemish of Flanders each having their own political parties,  Polls in the larger Dutch speaking region have repeatedly shown a huge surge to the right there that would translate nationally into a parliamentary majority for parties of the right.  Repeated polls have shown two parties of the populist / nationalist right,  Vlaams Belang and the New Flemish Alliance, running in the first and second places among parties, gaining nearly half the vote between them.

The most recent poll, conducted for RBTF radio and TV, showed Vlaams Belang receiving 25% of the vote and the New Flemish Alliance receiving 22%.  The center-right Flemish Christian Democrats are polling at 10%
