Who Really Benefits From The U.S. Classified Docs Leak? Pro-War Politicians And Think Tanks. | Eastern NC Now

    The real "winners" of the recent U.S. classified documents leaks might very well be pro-war politicians and think tanks who want the American taxpayer and Pentagon to speed up materiel support in the Russia-Ukraine war.

    Right now, various documents have been leaked on the social media platform Discord, which allegedly show that the U.S. has been lying to the American people about the status of the Ukrainians' success against President Vladimir Putin. Amongst those documents are battle plans for Ukrainian's rumored spring offensive. This information could put Ukrainian troops at risk, according to many, including Kori Schake of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI).

    Schake says that because of that breach, and the potential danger caused by it, the U.S. should also supply Ukraine with additional military aid to overcome any potential danger. "It is my great hope that, since we have increased the risk to Ukraine, we are also going to increase the assistance to Ukraine to help them attenuate the risk," Schake, who is a senior fellow and director of Foreign and Defense Policy Studies at AEI, told Bloomberg.

    Schake also added that the fact some documents might have been doctored by Russia suggests that the Kremlin has had these leaks for a while.

    The D.C. think tank director is not alone in hoping that America will up the ante in terms of support for Ukraine.

    Ben Barry, senior fellow for land warfare at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, expressed a similar sentiment to the Associated Press.

    "Publicizing an apparent shortage of anti-aircraft missiles may give comfort to Russia," Barry claimed. "But if it energizes Ukraine's partners to accelerate delivery of missiles and other air defense capabilities, Kyiv will be grateful. The bigger 'known unknown' is the extent to which these leaks influence U.S. political support for Ukraine."

    Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution also told The Hill that in light of the information, "the presumption should be that we may need to step up deliveries and possibly funds too."

    As noted in The Hill, the White House was reportedly not going to request any additional funding from Congress until the end of Fiscal Year 2023. Senate Republicans and Democrats are united in supporting the war - with many GOP senators believing that President Joe Biden has not gone far enough. Yet, in the House of Representatives, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has stated for months that he will not support a blank check to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

    The media outlet also spoke with aides from both parties who spoke on the condition of anonymity, who also argued that the intelligence documents add pressure on D.C. to do more for Ukraine.

    "The Pentagon leak is sparking concerns on Capitol Hill that the Biden administration may be waiting too long to prevent Ukraine from running out of air defense weapons, which could tip the advantage on the battlefield decisively toward Russia," The Hill reported.

    Until now, Biden has resisted sending aircraft and weapons such as F-16s and intercontinental ballistic missiles to Ukraine - despite bipartisan demands.

    In that case, it is easy to see how the public release of the alleged classified documents could have been done purposefully to push for more funding for the war. It certainly has united the think tanks toward that end - which means pro-war politicians who depend on those organizations for policy-making guidance will likely soon follow.

    That raises another question: Did the Deep State leak the classified docs on purpose to ramp up Ukraine aid?
