While some Americans are skeptical about UFOs, one member of Congress is convinced that the federal government covered up a crash of an alien spacecraft in Roswell, New Mexico, back in 1947.

Asked in a Newsmax interview if he believes there has been a cover-up, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) said, "I do, 100%."

"The military said we've recovered a saucer and then the next day they dropped this poor officer out and claim he holds up a piece of a hot air balloon and says, 'No, in fact, it was a hot air balloon,' which apparently was a top-secret program at the time and they've never would have disclosed it in any way," he said.

No one really knows what happened in Roswell, but a 1994 report by the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force made some claims. "The 'unusual' military activities in the New Mexico desert were high altitude research balloon launch and recovery operations. Reports of military units that always seemed to arrive shortly after the crash of a flying saucer to retrieve the saucer and 'crew,' were actually accurate descriptions of Air Force personnel engaged in anthropomorphic dummy recovery operations," the report read, Newsweek reported.

"We've been covering this up since the 40s," Burchett recently told NewsNation, adding that he doesn't "trust government, there's an arrogance about it, and I think the American public can handle it."

Burchett, who sits on a House committee investigating UFO sightings, said, "I'm just after the facts."

"I want to talk to people who have seen something and can provide some proof of what's going on. In fact, if we can disclose some things, some new facts - but just get the people before us that have seen it, who have great credentials, and just stop with all the nonsense," he said in an interview published at The Daily Wire.

"I hope we show the American public that we're serious about this issue - a recent poll showed that over half the people believe in this - and that we'll get a little closer to getting to the bottom of it," Burchett said.

"And we'll expose to the American public that this is a cover-up, that we are not being forthcoming, and that there is a group of us that want to make that happen - and hopefully, we don't get corrupted," he said.

Earlier this month, David Charles Grusch - a decorated former combat officer in Afghanistan and a veteran of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Reconnaissance Office - declared that he had given Congress reams of classified information about covert U.S. government programs that he says are now in possession of an intact craft of "non-human origin."

Grusch, 36, would know. He was the reconnaissance office's representative to the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Task Force from 2019-2021. And then from late 2021 to July 2022, he was the NGA's co-lead for UAP analysis and its representative to the task force.

The UAP expert said the information was illegally withheld from Congress, and he "filed a complaint alleging that he suffered illegal retaliation for his confidential disclosures," The Debrief reported.

"Grusch said the recoveries of partial fragments through and up to intact vehicles have been made for decades through the present day by the government, its allies, and defense contractors. Analysis has determined that the objects retrieved are 'of exotic origin (non-human intelligence, whether extraterrestrial or unknown origin) based on the vehicle morphologies and material science testing and the possession of unique atomic arrangements and radiological signatures,' he said," The Debrief reported.
