Beaufort County Government's General Meeting Agenda: Monday, December 6, 2010 | Eastern North Carolina Now

The Beaufort County Board of County Commissioners Will Meet to Discuss the County's Business

The Government of Beaufort County meets every month for at least one General Meeting to discuss and act on the county's business. Beaufort County employs the County Manager Form of Government, which stipulates that the board of county commissioners allow the county manager to set the agenda, and bring issues before them.

In this first meeting of this new board of county commissioners - even though this board of commissioners remains the same in personnel - the first order of business is the taking of the oath for the new commissioners and the election of a chairman and vice-chairman. While the issue of picking a chairman was once one that seemed to become the concern of some members of the community, it has lost its luster over the years for a variety of reasons. One day, I may do an opinion piece on why the bloom is certainly off that rose.

There may be some issues that are important in this meeting that are, as of this time unknown to me, that are important. As I read my agenda package - when I get it - I will revise this short commentary if something substantive presents itself.

Presently known to me as of now, the two most important issues for the upcoming meeting could be first, and foremost, Commissioner Hood Richardson's comments regarding an issue that has consumed a good deal of his time of the last 14 months - the Beaufort Regional Health System. I, on the other hand, will bring to the commissioners my concerns over the inability, of the those performing the county's mass appraisal, to perform a fair appraisal due to the lack of comparables since the real estate crash. I will present my idea at the meeting.
