Kenneth Alan John Adams Sr. | Eastern North Carolina Now

Mr. Kenneth Alan John Adams, Sr., age 90, a resident of Washington, NC, died Thursday, July 13, 2023, at his home.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. A memorial service will be held for the family later.

Mr. Adams was born in Battersea, London, England, on January 15, 1933, the son of the late John William Adams and the late Rose Elizabeth May Powell Adams. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Alberta Bender. They were married on May 11, 1976, in Barnegat, New Jersey. Ken was trained as a master shipwright and boatbuilder. He worked with several boat manufacturers, including Fountain Powerboats, and was also the owner of Quest Marine. Mr. Adams was one of the few American builders of competitive wooden offshore powerboats and earned a reputation for creating craft that handled whatever conditions their drivers were brave enough to attempt.

Mr. Adams's hobby of woodworking went along with his trade. Other hobbies included drawing, reading, and fishing. His smile, wit, and natural sense of humor brightened every room he entered.

Surviving along with his wife Mildred of the home are his children: Lee Adams (Chris) of Awendaw, SC; Kevin Adams (Christine) of Manning, SC; Mark Adams of Greentown, PA; Kim Adams Balutis (John) of Seymour, TN, Tina Fatcher (Steve) of Stewart, VA, Sandra Jackson (Tracy) of Bonneau, SC, and Ken Adams, Jr. (Jessica) of Washington; brothers: John Adams of England, and Roy Adams of New Zealand; twenty-six grandchildren: twenty-nine great-grandchildren and a great great grandchild. Mr. Adams was preceded in death, along with parents, by a daughter: Lynn Cambronero, and a brother: Terry Adams.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum, 315 Front Street, Beaufort, NC 28516, or Washington High School Boatbuilding Academy, 400 Slatestone Road, Washington, NC 27889.
