Top House Republican Suggests Biden Official Could Have Committed Treason | Eastern NC Now

    House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) suggested on Sunday that a top Biden administration official who has had their security clearance suspended could have potentially committed treason, although he conceded that there was no proof of that at this point.

    The FBI is reportedly investigating Rob Malley, President Joe Biden's special envoy to Iran, over alleged mishandling of classified documents.

    Semafor reported earlier this month that information about how the investigation has escalated "suggests that investigators are considering something beyond the lowest-level mishandling of documents."

    McCaul responded to the report during a Sunday interview on CBS News's "Face The Nation" with host Margaret Brennan.

    "You've been vocal in asking the administration for a briefing on the presidential envoy Rob Malley and why he is suspended," she said. "Do you have any promise that you'll get it? That you'll get information?"

    "Well, we sent- I sent a letter. We were rebuked," he responded. "We have been given no answer about his status. Remember, this is a top negotiator to Iran on one of the most, you know, nuclear weapons programs, highest classified secrets."

    "So we are giving a deadline of July 25th to have, you know, the diplomatic security and management secretary come in and brief us in a classified space," he continued. "Margaret, I can't tell you how important this is because if he somehow- you know, worst case scenario, transferred intelligence and secrets to our foreign adversaries."

    When Brennan noted that there was "no proof of that at this point," McCaul responded, "There's no proof of that, but if he did, that would be treason in my view."
