News Release:

Free Health Journaling Tools, and a Challenge to Lose 10 Million Pounds

RALEIGH, N.C.     At a press conference this morning, NC SPIN announced the kick off a new, public health education initiative and statewide health improvement challenge for North Carolina. The "A Healthier NC" campaign and challenge provides free health journaling tools and access to a clearinghouse of North Carolina health resources and educational materials at www.ahealthiernc.com. The "A Healthier NC" Web site provides resources and tools to address the following four areas of health:

    •   What does 'healthy' mean?
    •   What is our responsibility for improved health?
    •   What are smarter ways to access care?
    •   The "A Healthier NC" Challenge--a statewide challenge to engage 1 million North

Carolinians in 15 million hours of activity to lose 10 million pounds.

In addition to providing access to health resources, the "A Healthier NC" Web site is designed to facilitate group participation in the "A Healthier NC" Challenge, in fact the campaign's goal is to increase the number of healthy workplaces, healthy schools and healthy churches in North Carolina. At today's press conference, businesses, schools and faith-based organizations were encouraged to participate by several state leaders, including Superintendent June Atkinson, N.C. Department of Public Instruction; Secretary Sharon Decker, N.C. Department of Commerce; Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church; and Robin Cummings, M.D., director of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Rural Health and Community Care. Also in attendance at today's event were the State Health Director Dr. Laura Gerald, and V.P. of Government Affairs for the North Carolina Chamber Gary Salamedo.

Although she was not able to attend today's press conference, Aldona Wos, secretary of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services voiced her support for the initiative, saying "Our goal is to create a healthier North Carolina by empowering citizens to take responsibility for their own health and supporting them in making healthy lifestyle choices. The "A Healthier NC" Challenge is a wonderful example of a public-private partnership that aims to help citizens fulfill their potential and lead healthy, productive lives."

The "A Healthier NC" campaign is led by NC SPIN and supported by the following sponsors: N.C. Academy of Family Physicians, N.C. Medical Society, N.C. DHHS Office of Rural Health and Community Care, the AARP Decide.Create.Share campaign, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.C.

The idea for the "A Healthier NC" initiative arose out of concern for the state's low rankings in reports that measure health on the national and state level. In 2012, North Carolina was ranked thirty-third for health by the United Health Foundation's America's Health Rankings® (www.americashealthrankings.org/NC/2012). The Be Active North Carolina 2012 Report "Tipping the Scales" (http://www.ncpreventionpartners.org) also highlights the extent and cost of poor health choices by North Carolinians. The campaign was also inspired by a 1940s era campaign called the "Good Health Plan", which was initiated by N.C. Governor Mel Broughton to improve health services in the state.

Richard Burr, U.S. Senator North Carolina also offered his support of the "A Healthier NC" campaign and challenge, noting "North Carolinians--anytime they see themselves close to the bottom--have risen to the challenge. And, I think a challenge on health is a very appropriate thing."

In addition to support from state leaders from the public and private sectors, sponsors also voiced their support for the "A Healthier NC" campaign in the following quotes:

Tom Campbell, creator and producer of NC SPIN (ncspin.com), and sponsor of "A Healthier NC", said, "A Healthier NC is about more than just weight loss--it's about transforming lives. It's an appeal and call to action for all of us to be active participants in our own health. It's encouraging one another to make smarter choices about what we eat, how active we are, and how important it is to take care of ourselves, and the ones we love."

Robert Seligson, executive vice president and CEO of the North Carolina Medical Society (www.ncmedsoc.org) explained their support in this way, "The North Carolina Medical Society is committed to "A Healthier NC" both in our own office and as a North Carolina initiative. At NCMS headquarters, we have a gym and personal trainer to help staff get in shape - many of our employees have lost weight and improved their overall health. We also know that for any real and lasting change to occur in our state and national health care system, there needs to be a culture change in which individuals take more personal responsibility for their wellness. Improving our health through proper nutrition and regular exercise will help minimize preventable chronic diseases, and will make North Carolina a healthier place for our citizens."

"As family physicians we see the impact of poor health on a daily basis. We're excited to be involved in an initiative to give our patients one more tool in their fight to stay healthy and prevent bad outcomes. We would never wait until we had engine failure to take preventative maintenance steps on our vehicles, but sometimes we forget to maintain our own personal health. We see this as a great way to work together to improve the health of citizens. We look forward to encouraging our patients to use this new tool to battle obesity by forming support teams through the "A Healthier NC" website." said Dr. Robert L. Rich, advocacy chair and past president of the N.C. Academy of Family Physicians (www.ncafp.com/academy).

Gregory K. Griggs, MPA, CAE, executive vice president of N.C. Academy of Family Physicians added, "All our citizens deserve access to a primary care physician. Having a relationship with a medical home for you and your family has been proven to improve health and lower costs. Working to prevent disease now saves our healthcare system billions of dollars by avoiding unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency department visits down the road."

The president of the N.C. Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Shannon Dowler, emphasized the importance of the "A Healthier NC" campaign's focus on what being healthy means: "Good health is not defined as the absence of disease. It is a state of wellbeing that requires active participation on each individual's part. All of us have a role to pay in achieving or maintain good health, and it's crucial for everyone to know their numbers (from blood pressure to cholesterol to Body Mass Index) and know the steps that you can personally take to improve your individual health."

Doug Dickerson, director of AARP North Carolina (www.aarp.org/decide), which is a sponsor of "A Healthier NC", said, "It's time to come together to shine a spotlight on ourselves and start making plans for how we'll live the best in every chapter of our lives. Living a healthier life can lead to a living a happier life.

Decide. Create. Share. is a national education and awareness initiative of AARP dedicated to helping women take charge of their future. We are pleased to work with "A Healthier NC" to make sure people have access to the free information and resources that can help people decide where they see themselves in the future and to help them get there."

Michael Panas, founder of Healthwise Champions said, "As the program manager for the Oklahoma City "This City is going on a Diet" (www.okcmillion) for the past five years, I have personally seen how a program like this can bring awareness, motivation, and change the health profile of a city. I am excited to see what a statewide program will accomplish in North Carolina. "A Healthier NC" brings resources and information to individuals on a statewide basis, yet provides person tools, social group formation, and combines this with outcome tracking and measuring success. I anticipate much success for those individuals, groups, businesses, and communities who participate. What a great free resource to the citizens of North Carolina." The "A Healthier NC" Web site was designed by Healthwise Champions (www.healthwisechampions).
