El Salvador imposes new tax to discourage US-bound migrants | Eastern NC Now

El Salvador's conservative president has imposed a new tax on arrivals into the country from India and 57 African countries to discourage migrants headed for the US from entering through his country.  Arrivals from these countries will have to pay $1,130 before they enter El Salvador.

Recently, leftist run Nicaragua has been selling cheap entry visas to bring a flood of US bound migrants in from the African country of Mauratania to depart from there to the US borders.  Those flights connect in El Salvador and the new El Salvador tax will also apply to them.

The tax was announced for "airport modernization" but only applies to countries from which they expect significant numbers of migrants bound for the US.
