George Elliott Matthews Jr. | Eastern NC Now

    George Elliott Matthews, Jr., age 76, a resident of Bath, NC, passed peacefully on Monday, July 15, 2024. George was born on November 6, 1947, in New Hanover County, Wilmington, NC, to the late George Elliott Matthews, Sr., and Loumina Wilma Vereen Matthews. He was a graduate of New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC. George spent nearly thirty years with International Paper, Riegelwood, NC. He enjoyed boating the coastal waters of Hampstead, NC, oystering, fishing, duck hunting, gardening, golf, vacationing, sitting on the porch with his creek view in Bath, NC, and spending time with his many family and friends.

    George married Tamara Dix on November 9, 1991. Survivors include his wife Tamara J. Matthews of the home, his children George Elliott Matthews, III of Washington, DC, and Lisa Michelle Matthews of Greenville, NC, sister, Judy Russell (Harold) of Wilmington, NC, and nephews Jay and David and their families, brother, Charlie Matthews (Sherrie) of Pickens, SC, grandchildren, Christa Matthews of Hampstead, NC, and Eric Freeman (great grandson Malachi) of Greenville, SC, and a host of other family and friends who will miss his humor and kind and gentle spirit.

    A Celebration of Life will be held on September 14, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Harbour Village Marina, 176 Harbour Village Dr., Hampstead, NC 28443.
