Fritz Newsom | Eastern NC Now

    Mr. Fritz Newsom, age 84, a resident of Washington, NC died Tuesday October 29, 2024, at his home with family by his side.

    A private memorial service will be held for family later.

    Mr. Newsom was born in McDowell County, West Virginia on July 7, 1940, son of the late William C. Newsom and the late Nettie Stewart Newsom. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV and served his country for twenty years in the U.S. Air Force. On September 17, 1976, he married the former Phyllis Ann Harris who preceded him in death on July 30, 2019. Following his military career, he retired with twenty years as director of housing at Washington Housing Authority. In his spare time, he enjoyed yard work and was an avid reader.

    Survivors include his daughter: Catherine Leigh Newsom and her companion Aaron Jones of Washington; grandchildren: Anna Whitley and her spouse Molly of Wilmington, and Jeremy D. Benish, Jr. of Washington; sister: Lou Skerkavich and her husband Johnny of Youngstown, OH.

    In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Beaufort County Humane Society, P.O. Box 33, Washington, NC 27889.
