GOP wins in Texas legislature paves way for school choice in state | Eastern NC Now
Governor Abbot reveals that election give them the votes to pass school choice
In addition to a landslide victory for Senator Ted Cruz against a flood of out of state liberal money in the US Senate race, the election in Texas has also produced a State House majority for Governor Abbot's school choice agenda. While School Choice has easily passed the conservative Texas senate, a liberal Republican Speaker and his allies kept it bottled up in the House.
In this year's Republican primaries, Governor Abbot endorsed a raft of conservative challengers to the Speaker and his liberal Republican allies, beating the Speaker's grouping in most of those challenges. School choice was the deciding issue on who the governor endorsed.
For the general election, Governor Abbot again made endorsements of supporters of school choice, and he has achieved a legislative majority to pass that issue. Two of the governor's endorsed candidates captured longtime Democrat seats, further bolstering the Republican majority in the Texas House.
