German left-liberal goverenment collapses - snap election likely | Eastern NC Now

Free Democrats finally pull the plug on wildly unpopular government

ENCNow

Germany's left-liberal government has collapsed as one of its coalition partners, the Free Democrats, have finally left the coalition depriving it of a majority.  The Social Democrat Chancellor is begging to stay in power with a minority government until the regularly scheduled election for the Budestag (parliament) in March, but the more likely outcome is a vote of no condifence leading to a snap election this fall.

The Free Democrats, a center-right classical liberal party was always the odd duck in the coalition with the center left Social Democrat and the far left Green Party, as the Free Democrats' base is geared to small government, low taxes, getting tough on illegal immigration, and avoiding the Green Deal.  It state election after state election, the party's base has abandoned it, leading to the Free Democrats losing all their seats in many states.  Waiting so long to pull the plug on the Scholz government may have doomed the party, as polls are now showing that nationally, they are below the Constitutional threshold to win any seats in the Bundestag.

The Social Democrats and Greens have also been getting trounced in state elections but starting from a larger base are not in as dire a situation as the Free Democrats.  The Greens have also been wiped out in a few state elections, but not nearly as many as the Free Democrats.

Polls are showing the traditional conservative Christian Democrats as the most popular party in Germany with voters, with the populist nationalist anti-immigration right Alternativ fur Deutschland a close second. The Social Democrats are a distant third and may be overtaken by the BSW, a new anti-immigration, anti-woke and anti-Green Deal party of the left.

The upcoming German election will be an immigration election. The Christian Democrats, who had already toughened their position against illegal immigration after Merkel left, has just further toughened their position. On the left the anti-immigration BSW is eating heavily into the vote of the Social Democrats and Green and will probably wipe out the Left Party entirely.
