German election: CDU races to the right on illegal immigration | Eastern North Carolina Now

wants to get out of European Court of Human Rights

ENCNow

Germany has a snap election for the Bundestag (parliament) in February after the left-liberal government collapsed, and illegal immigration is a hot issue.  The frontrunning traditional conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) finds the populist nationalist anti-immigration right Alternativ fur Deutschland (AfD) running second and nipping at its heels.  Both parties already have provisions to crack down on illegal immigration in their manifetos (platforms).

The CDU has just marched further to the right on immigration by joining the AfD in calling for Germany to consider getting out of the European Convention on Human Rights which included the European Court of Human Rights.  That court has become a huge problem in constantly ruling against deportations of illegal aliens and expanding rights to asylum far beyond what the actual Convention agreed to.  One highly publicized case in the UK involved a jihad supporting Muslim imam who actively promoted jihad being ordered deported until the European Court of Human Rights denied it to protect "his right to a family life with his cat".

The European Convention on Human Rights is a separate entity from the EU itself, and much easier to withdraw from.  The AfD has suggested leaving the EU entirely and leaving its euro currency.

British parties of the right are also critical of the European Court of Human Rights. Nigel Farage's populist nationalist anti-immigration Reform Party has called for leaving the Convention on Human Rights (the UK failed to leave it when it left the EU).  Many in the Conservative Party are also openly calling for the same thing but the party has not yet officially adopted that position.

This may be Germany's last chance to solve its immigration problem before it is so overwhelmed it would be hopeless. The real key to this German election will be the coalition formed after it. The best bet would be the CDU/CSU and AfD, which would have a clear majority to tackle the immigration problem. While the FPD also largely agrees on immigration, they are not likely to be back after the election, and if they sqeak in, it will be without enought seats to give the CDU a majority. The populist left BSW takes a hard line against illegal immigration but its economic agenda is so socialist it would not be a good fit for the CDU. The main obstacle to a CDU and AfD coaltion is egos and attitudes of some CDU leaders. Polls show the public is in favor of such a coalition.
