    Shirley Ann Dixon Elks, age 88 a resident of Chocowinity, died Saturday, December 28, 2024, at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital.

    A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington with Jimmy Beasley officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends Thursday Evening at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and other times at the home.

    Shirley was born on July 29, 1936, in Beaufort County, to the late James Hyman Dixon and Hattie Melissa Hill Dixon. She attended Chocowinity High School. On November 8, 1952, she married Dalton Elks, who preceded her in death on June 10, 2014. Shirley was the activity director at the Britthaven Nursing Center and volunteered there after her retirement. She was a member of the Saturday Night Jamboree and helped form the Beaufort County Developmental Center. Shirley loved gardening, fishing, going to the ocean and picking up seashells. She was preceded in death by her son, James Phillip Elks and Gerald Dalton Elks, daughter in law, Lori Elks, and her brother Rev. James Richard Dixon, sisters, Nell Mills Roebuck and Gladys Winstead, grandchildren, Kati Elizabeth Harris, and Matthew Goldberg.

    Survivors include her children, Sharon Housley (Doug) of Chocowinity, Donna Pittman (Allen) of Washington, sisters, Elizabeth "Lib" Respess of Pantego and Dorcas Swain of Hampton, grandchildren, Wayne Harris (Callie) of Greenville, Tania Harris of Chocowinity, Emily Toler of Atlanta, GA, Jacob Pittman and Michael Goldberg, great grandchild, Katie Harris.

    Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Lights of Love, c/o ECU Health Beaufort Hospital.
