Mamie “Tootsie” Gertrude Jackson Cox, age 97, a resident of Washington and former resident of Belhaven died Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson, NC.

    Mamie "Tootsie" Gertrude Jackson Cox, age 97, a resident of Washington and former resident of Belhaven died Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson, NC.

    A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church with Rev. Gillian Pollock officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

    Mrs. Cox was born in Beaufort County on April 17, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Clarence Benjamin Jackson and Lillian Winfield Jackson. Mrs. Cox graduated from Belhaven High School in 1944. She graduated from the Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing and attended, Atlantic Christian College, and the University of Baltimore in Maryland. She became a registered nurse in 1948. She worked at Tayloe Hospital, Beaufort County Hospital and Washington Pediatrics for Dr. David Tayloe and Dr. Frank Stallings, for 32 years before retiring.

    In October 1950 she married Leslie Willis Cox, who preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Marky Jackson Boss, brother, George Jackson and grandchild, Lillian Chason. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, The Good Time Girls, the "Lunch Bunch", and the Canasta Club. She had a unique way of connecting with anyone she meet. To this day, when someone speaks her name, it is typically accompanied by a twinkling smile or an outright chuckle.

    Mrs. Cox is survived by her son, Leslie "Skeet" W. Cox, Jr. and wife Libby of Louisburg, NC, daughter, Cate "Cathy" Cox Chason and husband Eric of Barrington, RI, granddaughter Hannah Chason (Barret) of Pawtucket, RI, brother, Clarence B. "Bennie" Jackson (Joanna) of Hamstead, step-grandchildren, Megan Lively (Vincent), Maria Allen (David) and Bradd Nichols (Candace), and eight great grandchildren.

    Special thanks to the staff and residents at Franklin Oaks in Louisburg, NC. Gratitude is also expressed to the First Christian Church of Washington, NC.
