Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC from President Barbara Tansey | Eastern North Carolina Now

BCCC will begin registration Monday, Sept. 16, for the "Great Eight" courses that will begin Tuesday, Oct. 15. The classes will give those interested in enrolling in college or those who would like to add an additional class the chance to do so. About 50 percent of these classes are available online as part of BCCC's effort to meet the needs of those students in our service area who live at a distance from the college. Several of these courses are available for transfer to one of the 16 colleges and universities that are part of the University of North Carolina system. Thanks to Vice President of Academics Crystal Ange and her team for their work on this project.

Here's some of what happened at BCCC during the past week:

  • Scott Shook, the member of the State Community College Board who represents our region, visited the BCCC campus on Tuesday. He met with members of the senior staff, who shared with him their concerns and ideas. After the meeting, Scott and I toured the campus. Scott was appointed to the board by the governor and lives in Greenville. I was delighted to welcome him to BCCC and look forward to working with him as he serves on the state board.

  • Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards and members of the Student Government Association have issued a challenge to all students, faculty and staff to get up and get moving! For every 20 minutes of walking, jogging, biking, dancing, exercising, etc., that you do, you will receive a star on the Windows of Fame. If you earn 100 stars, your name will be placed in a drawing for a special gift that will be given in December at the SGA Christmas Social. You can email Theresa with your fitness reports at theresae@beaufortccc.edu. Trustees and Foundation board members are also invited to participate in the Making Tracks Across Campus Challenge.

  • Foundation Director Judy Jennette reports that since July 1, the Foundation has awarded 12 emergency grants to students totaling $5,403.25. Over the past five years, the budget for emergency grants has grown from $1,200 to $12,000 thanks, in part, to contributions from PotashCorp-Aurora and Rod Cantrell, CFP, among others. These grants are an important part of the Foundation's work in helping our students stay in school and be successful. Watch for more about these grants in the BCCC Newsblog and upcoming issues of Campus Connections.

  • BCCC's Director of Human Resources Emily Woolard announced three upcoming professional development opportunities: How to us an iPad/Android Tablet and Is There an App for That?, noon, Sept. 25; Using Mediasite for Lecture Capture and Ineractive Technology to Enhance Your Online Course, noon, Oct. 22, and Using Electronic Library Resources, noon, Nov. 19. All three will be held in the Emergent Technology Lab, Building 5. Attendance is limited to 16 participants, per session, so registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Personal and personnel notes: Betty Mitchell Gray has joined the full-time staff as Public Information Coordinator.

BCCC's Small Business Center helps business grow in Creswell

Main Street Eatery is leading the way to an economic revival in Creswell thanks to help from BCCC's Business and Industry Services. Director Lentz Stowe came to the aid of business owners Sharon and Billy Maitland, helping the couple receive a grant that allowed the Maitlands to renovate an unused building in Creswell that now houses the restaurant. The restaurant is providing jobs for 10 people. Business and Industry Services has arranged one-on-one consultation to help the Maitlands fine-tune their business to keep it a vital part of the community. Helping our region's economy grow is just one of the missions of BCCC and I thank Lentz and his team for their work.

Sept . 10 - Book talk by Dr. Maurice Godwin on criminal profiling, serial murder and crime scene analysis, noon, BCCC library.

Sept. 11 - Staff Association Meeting, 2 p.m. BCCC Library Computer Lab, Building 9.

Sept. 12 - Faculty Senate Welcome Luncheon for New Faculty, noon, East Lobby, Building 12.

    Sept. 17 - Faculty/Staff Kick-off, noon, auditorium, Building 8.
