Beaufort CCC Joins UNC-Chapel Hill’s Scholars of Global Distinction Program | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, N.C.     Beaufort County Community College (Beaufort CCC) has partnered with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill through its UNC World View initiative to offer the Scholars of Global Distinction program. The program provides students the opportunity to earn a global learning certificate recognized by UNC-Chapel Hill while completing their associate degree at Beaufort CCC.

    The Scholars of Global Distinction program is facilitated by UNC World View, an initiative of UNC-Chapel Hill that mobilizes the university's international resources to help community colleges create truly global campuses.

    Dr. Hazael Andrew, associate director of UNC World View, oversees the program at the university level. Ben Deck, lead instructor for communications, social sciences and health, serves as Beaufort CCC's liaison for the program and is the local point of contact for students interested in joining.

    "I think it's a great opportunity for our students to realize that there are different ways of looking at the world, different perspectives, aside from what we may see here every day," said Dr. Dave Loope, Beaufort CCC president.

    Students participating in the program will complete at least 15 credit hours of globally intensive coursework. Beaufort CCC already offers sufficient courses to fulfill this requirement. In addition, students will engage in eight international activities or dialogues. UNC World View provides access to opportunities throughout the year to meet this requirement.

    "We started in 2014 with just three community colleges. In 2019, we had 12. We're now at 37," said Dr. Hazael Andrew, associate director of UNC World View. "This year, we had our largest graduating class-181 students."

    To complete the program, students will also participate in 30 hours of global experience through a study abroad or domestic intercultural experience. The Scholars of Global Distinction Program will collaborate closely with Beaufort CCC's Study Abroad Program and Suzanne Stotesbury to support students in meeting this goal. Alternatives will be available for students unable to travel internationally. Finally, students will present a capstone project based on their global learning experience.


    Graduates of the program will be recognized at Beaufort CCC's commencement ceremony. Scholars who continue their education at UNC-Chapel Hill will also receive support from UNC World View during their transition to the university.

    In addition to student programming, UNC World View supports faculty development. Beaufort CCC instructors interested in redesigning courses to include global content can apply for a $750 stipend from UNC World View. Professional development opportunities for faculty are offered year-round.
