new poll: Brown and Whatley perform about the same against Cooper | Eastern NC Now

in spite of GOP establishment's heavy push for Whatley

ENCNow

Republican voters will choose a Senate nominee in March between longtime establishment operative and lobbyist Michael Whatley, and conservative author, former JAG officer, and attorney Don Brown.  The establishment is heavily pushing Whatley, trying to pretend he is already the nominee and there is not a primary. The NC Republican Party, Republican National Committee, and National Republican Senatorial Committee have even already set up a "Whatley Victory Committee".

Not so fast.  In spite of all of Whatley's establishment money and establishment thumb on the scales, Brown and Whatley perform about the same in a general election matchup with leftwing former governor Roy Cooper according to a recent poll.

The Carolina Journal has been regularly polling the general election against Cooper, and their last poll included Brown for the first time.  The result was that Cooper beats Whatley 47 to 39, and Brown 48 to 38.

Another bad sign for Whatley is that he has gone backwards since the last Carolina Journal poll.  Two months ago, Cooper was only leading by 4 points, 46 to 42.  Since then, Whatley has lost 3 points and Cooper has gained 1.

Maybe this should be expected.  Whatley has chosen the same guy who bungled Governor Pat McCrory's failed reelection campaign to manage the Whatley campaign for Senate.

Steve Bannon, a major MAGA leader, has declared that "Whatley is NOT MAGA" and that he is running so poorly in North Carolina because MAGA voters have no enthusiasm for him.

Considering that Whatley has a good bit higher name recognition at this point, those poll numbers are much more impressive for Brown than for Whatley.
