Costa Rica is now the latest in a string of rightwing election victories in Latin America.  It follows victories by the right in Argentina, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, and Honduras, where the right took power from the left, and El Salvador where a president from the right won landslide reelection.

In Costa Rica, staunch conservative Laura Fernandez of the rightwing Sovereign Peoples Party won the presidency by a wide margin.  Her party also won control of congress, winning 30 of its 57 seats, up from the 8 it held going into the election.
