    Mr. John Gilbert Vick, a resident of Durham, NC, died Thursday March 5, 2026, at the home of his daughter Anna in Washington. Called Gil by his friends and "Moach" by his grandchildren, Gilbert was 83.

    Mr. Vick was born in Lenoir County on October 4, 1942, son of the late George Elliott Vick and the late Betsy Patterson Vick. He was a graduate of Grainger High School in Kinston and continued his education at Mars Hill College, completing his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at NC State University. Later in life he earned his business degree and teachers certificate at NC Central University.

    On July 20, 1968, he married the former Laura Anne Greer of Whiteville who survives. Following his working career as an electrical engineer in the Research Triangle, Raleigh, he taught physics at Hillside High School in Durham. His hobbies were sailing, woodworking, performing experiments of all types and volunteering with the Girl Scouts. Through the Girl Scouts he met his wife of fifty-seven years.

    Surviving along with his wife Laura of the home are his children: Brian Jackson Vick (Melissa) of Oak Island, Anna Elizabeth Vick (Andy Thon) of Washington, and Stephen Greer Vick (Kara Lynn Pittman) of Chapel Hill; grandchildren: Viridiana Pittman Vick Rankin (Zachary) of Durham, Clara Marguerite Thon of Washington, Vivienne Greer Thon of Washington; great-grandchildren: Zachary Greer Rankin of Durham and Jackson Berry Rankin of Durham; brothers: George Elliott Vick, Jr. (Anne) of Kinston, Simon Patterson Vick (Gretchen) of Kinston; sisters: Betsy Vick Leder (Charles) of Miami, FL, and Laura Vick Dillard of Raleigh; and a brother-in-law: Andy Wilkinson of Raleigh. Mr. Vick was preceded in death, along with his parents, by a son, David Elliott Vick, and a sister, Mildred Vick Wilkinson.

    A memorial service will be held in the future for family and friends at the Vick-Thon home in Washington.

    In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Friends of Lake Waccamaw, 809 Pecan Lane, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450, or to the Girl Scouts-North Carolina Coastal Pines, 6901 Pinecrest Road, Raleigh, NC 27613.
