ENCNow

Denmark's center-left Social Democrats have taken a much harder line against illegal immigration than most left leaning parties in Europe, but that did not save them in Sunday's parliamentary election from a surge for parties calling for more aggressive deportation, or "re-migration" as it is often called in Europe.  The leftwing bloc, led by the Social Democrats lost its majority in parliament and the Social Democrats themselves had their worst showing as a single party in a century.  The leftwing block has been cut to 84 seats in the 179 seat parliament.  The Social Democrats  was still the largest party in parliametn but had their worst showing since 1903, losing 12 seats for a new total of 38..

The biggest winner in the election was the populist nationalist anti-immigration Danish People Party, which gained 11 new seats for a total of 16.  Another even more strident anti-immigration populist nationalist party, the Citizens Party, also entered parliament for the first time with 4 seats.  Anther rightwing populist nationalist party, the Denmark Democrats running in its second election, won 10 seats.

Parties of the traditional right also did well, with the Conservatives gaining 2 seats for a total of 13 and the rightwing libertarian anti-tax Liberal Alliance gaining 2 seats for a new total of 16.  Parties of the center-right also entered parliament  Overall, fifteen parties will be represented in the new parliament.

The sitting government resigned after their election loss, setting off a scramble to form a new coalition.
