US Justice Department to enforce SCOTUS ruling against states with racial gerrymanders | Eastern NC Now

Democrat safe districts under fire

ENCNow

UPDATE:  Tennessee and Alabama have now called special legislative session to address their racially gerrymandered congressional districts  in response to the recent Supreme Court decision.  Ironically, in Tennessee, an end to the racial gerrymandering is expected to replace a white liberal Democrat currently in Congress with a black conservative Republican.

ORIGINAL POST;

Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice has announced that the DOJ will actively work to enforce this weeks US Supreme Court ruling that struck down racially gerrymandered congressional districts.  Various estimates range from 12 to 25 on the number of safe Democrat districts that have been created by racial gerrymandering.

Several states are already taking action against the racial gerrymanders.  Florida passed a new congressional district map hours after the Supreme Court ruling was announced. Louisiana, whose districts led to the ruling, has cancelled its congressional primaries in order to redraw its map.  Texas redrew its maps earlier to comply with a Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that had struck down racially gerrymandered districts that were based on combinations of ethnic groups.  Alabama has called a special session of its legislature for Money, May 4 to deal with their racial gerrymandering that had been required by a rogue district court.  Other states have indicated they may act on their own to come into line with the SCOTUS ruling.

The announcement by Assistant AG Dhillon now shows the US Department of Justice will engage with states that do not clean up their district maps.  That could mean filing lawsuits against such states.  The new Democrat map in California is one that could run afoul of the SCOTUS ruling but finding an honest judge in that state may be difficult.
