News Release:

    Stan,

    I want to reach out and give you an explanation for my decisions. I've had some time to ruminate on it.

    I got involved politically because I believe that our taxes were too high; that as a community we are paying more for basic services than similar neighboring communities; and that an active council could invite businesses and schools to our area successfully.

    These things are all still true. It doesn't take too much investigating to discover this for oneself.

    We had many businesses, developers, and private schools interested in coming here. Some still might as we were fairly far along in our discussions.

    But what became readily apparent is that real power does not lie in the hands of the elected officials. The City Manager truly holds all of the power. If that individual has the will, then great things will happen. I believe we have chosen a great city manager. The council is merely a rubber stamping agency. Worse, the council is only the illusion of a rubber stamping agency. All real activity happens without the consent, approval, or approbation of the council.

    But what pushed me over the edge was personal, in the end. Random citizens were stopping by the restaurant harassing my daughter. Several people pulled into my driveway to attempt to argue with my 8 and 11 year olds over politics, which they naturally know nothing about. Someone came into our home while I was away and Shari was here alone.

    It is one thing to endure all of this personally. It's another to put my family through it. It is far worse to put everyone through it knowing that I don't even really have an impact from my position as a councilman.

    I wish the best for the community, but I believe that the best we can do individually is to provide goods and services to the people. Business and commerce are society's true friends. Government can only take from some and redistribute to others.

    I leave politics and the game that it is to those who enjoy playing that game. I will focus on real life instead.
