Florida public schools curriculum will require instruction on history and evils of communism | Eastern NC Now

Henry Hinton explains how public education is to blame for lurch toward socialism

ENCNow

The Florida state Board of Education beginning this school year is requiring instruction in History and Evils of Communism in grades 6 and above as part of the required curriculum.  Governor deSantis strongly approved this measure.  In a state with a large Cuban American population made up of refugee families that fled Cuban communism under Fidel Castro, this should be a popular change to the curriculum.  However, it is also a state whose teachers union held a press conference to support student anti-ICE walkouts, so it may get some pushback, too.

ORIGINAL POST:

Commenting on the most recent Democrat Socialist of America defeat of the Democrat Party establishment in the Florida US Senate primary, WTIB morning show host Henry Hinton gave his thoughts of what is behind the recent socialist wave.  He blamed it on public schools pushing the "woke" narrative in the classrooms for the last twenty years.

This highlights the importance of public school curriculum in keeping the America we know and are proud of.  There are too many forces, starting with the leftist teachers unions pushing the leftwing agenda in the classroom.

Thanks RINO Hunter for the mention: You can and have rooted out RINOs in the past. Please continue to do so.

VZ, the real problem of the local GOP is opportunists, many ex-Democrats suddenly wanting to run as fake "Republicans" because they cannot win as Democrats. That is an even bigger problem that internal factions within the party.

On the school board, Monica Davis has been a Democrat most of the time she has lived in Beaufort County and only recently switched to "Republican". She has also been a card carrying member of NC's liberal teachers union. The new member for Bath is also a teachers union member and I am told has never shown up for anything in the Republican Party. Then you have our opportunist NC House nominee, the water boy for Big Ag, Darin Armstrong, who was a longtime Marc Basnight Democrat and even a major contributor to Basnight's campaigns. Those candidates all coordinated together along with sheriff challenger Kerry Cox and county commission candidate John Edwards. Of the lot of them, only Cox has ever shown his face at a GOP function before running for office and Cox was forced to resign from the county GOP executive committee for party disloyalty when he publicly supported a Democrat candidate for sheriff in 2022.

Another last minute ex-Democrat who did a last minute switch to run under false colors as a Republican was Frankie Waters. As a commissioner, he has always been an ally of the actual Democrats serving on the commission. His "Republican" identity has always been a fake facade.

Looking at our county and legislative ticket in November, the only "Republican" candidates who have an actual background in the GOP are Senator Bob Brinson, Commissioner Stan Deatherage, Commission candidate Ashley Woolard, Sheriff Scott Hammonds and school board members Charles Hickman and Terry Williams. The others are all opportunists and mostly warmed over Democrats..

Van Zant, in my race at least, I had solid support from both factions of the party, other than the Walkers. In the vote to fill the vacancy, I was unanimously supported by executive committee members from both sides of the party. The opponent, nominated by Mrs. Walker, received zero votes. In the primary, I had volunteers and contributors from both wings of the party. The factional split in the party was NOT a factor in my race. The main activists in my opponents campaign, other than the Walkers, was a group of school teachers.

In retrospect, I wish our campaign had put more focus on curriculum than we did.

Van Zant: Now that the ruling of Louisiana vs Callais, by the U.S. Supreme Court, is judging permanent, precedent setting clarification regarding our 14th Amendment's guarantees; which may now automatically stipulate that Beaufort County's school board is out of constitutional compliance with that Amendment's guarantee that voting citizens may NOT be afforded "Equal Protection Under Our Laws" here in Beaufort County, and furthermore, it should be immediately prudent that Beaufort County change their election method for school board members.

Is the dispute over school curriculum the reason that School Board member Carolyn Walker and her husband Randy were so strident in working the Chocowinity Fire Department precinct voting place for Chocowinity and Gilead against School Board Members Charles Hickman and Steven Rader back during the last primary? She really had a bee in her bonnet over something.

No one can deny that the deficit has grown under most administrations. Under trump, it has grown much larger. Trump has done nothing to bring it down. That is just a fact.

Rino Hunter makes a very good observation. How does conservative voting Beaufort County end up with a majority liberal voting School Board that is becoming more liberal? It is becoming more liberal because 2 teachers union members have been added from the last Republican primary. Mind you, this board presently consists of 8 Republicans and 1 Democrat. I propose that this happens the same way we have a county commission with 5 Republicans and 2 Democrats that is controlled by the 2 Democrats.

On the County Commission 2 of the 5 Republicans are recent changes from the Democrat Party that switched for election purposes. Surprise, surprise, they are the ones aligned with the Democrats on the Board that give the liberals the Board advantage.

The situation on the School Board lately has been immensely interesting:

In District 8 Conservative Donald Shreve was defeated in a crowded primary field by a teacher union candidate that has already shown herself to be a liberal.

In District 6 an interesting progression of events transpired. When Conservative Gary Carlton moved there was an appointment process by the local Republican Party Executive Committee in order to fill the seat. Executive Committee members residing in School District 6 got to vote on the applicants that filed for the position. Highly qualified conservative Steven Rader asked to be considered. In response, at least two presently serving Republican School Board members from other districts worked on finding an opponent. For sure we know one was involved, because Mrs. Carolyn Walker made the motion for the other candidate. Mr. Rader prevailed on the vote.

When Mr. Rader sought to defend the seat in the recent primary, Ive been told that Mrs. Walker worked on recruiting another candidate to oppose Rader in District 6. We know for certain that she worked at the polls for that District 6 opponent. That's a lot of meddling in other districts by Carolyn Walker. In this instance her teacher union candidate won the primary.

In District 2, Republican Charles Hickman won the general election back in 2022. I do not believe a Republican had ever run in that district before. Hickman won over an incumbent Democrat that had held the seat for decades. In the most recent primary, elements of the local Republican party suddenly got interested in the 2nd District for the first time and produced a candidate in opposition to Mr. Hickman. Again, with support from outside of this district also, including School Board member Carolyn Walker and her husband Commissioner Randy Walker who campaigned at the polls against Hickman. I hear that the notorious Ms. Forrest from Philly and pal of Chairman Garris was involved too. Could it be that those folks were not motivated to oppose a Democrat but could not stand a conservative Republican in the seat? Mr. Hickman prevailed in this one.

I don't know what to make of the SB District 4 race, so I'll leave it alone.

Conclusion:
1. The local Democrat Party seems to have little to do with this continuing move to the left on Beaufort County Boards and Commissions - Not overtly anyway.
2. A faction of the Beaufort County Republican Party (which seems to be the controlling faction) is highly invested in this move to the left of our Boards and Commissions.

There is certainly more than just circumstantial evidence to support such a conclusion.

Let me expand on what is going on with the Social Studies (history) curriculum here in the Beaufort County Schools.

Social Studies (history) has been probably the most contested curriculum area around the country. It is the focus of the furor going on in Iowa. There the Department of Education came out with a Social Studies curriculum embedded with lots of the woke agenda from promoting open borders to a very one sided presentation on climate issues, and lots of other things in between. The governor and legislature told them that was unacceptable. They produced a new version that only slightly watered down those things. The governor and legislature again told them it was unacceptable and had to be changed.

Here in Beaufort County, our school system has not had a Social Studies curriculum at all for years. Each individual teacher has had to put together their own. That means there is nothing remotely consistent about what is being taught. Many very conscientious teachers do their best to pull together what materials they can on an objective basis. However, there is likely to be some personal ideology seeping through in some cases, whether intentionally or simply because for some people their own beliefs and the "facts" become intertwined in their minds. I would hope that teachers doing this intentionally is rare, but there is no way to know. The history teachers I have personally talked to seem to be doing this objectively.

Having an adopted curriculum by the School Board gives a consistent approach throughout the school system and is a way to know what is being taught. This would also take a burden off of teachers.

A couple of years ago, a committee of teachers appointed by the school board proposed adopting the SAVVAS social studies curriculum. This company is known for injecting DEI in its curricula. In Florida, even its math curriculum was rejected because even math was loaded with DEI. In Beaufort County, a standing room only crowd came to a school board meeting objecting to this curriculum, and the school board voted to reject it.

Several of us on the school board have raised the issue of moving forward on adopting a Social Studies curriculum, but we keep getting pushback. Realistically, finding the money to pay for it is an issue. However, there are some curricula out there that are free, where finding the money would not be an issue. One of those that reflects American values rather than the woke agenda is produced by Hillsdale College and is well regarded. My predecessor on the board, Gary Carlton, was promoting this back during his tenure. It is an option that should be considered.

(My comments are my own. I do not speak for the School Board as a whole. The School Board can only take official action as a body)
