UN body demands immediate "reparations" for slavery from western countries | Eastern NC Now

A UN body has demanded that a number of western countries immediately make "reparation" for slavery to persons of African descent.  They have interpreted a 1965 international Convention on Racial Discrimination as requiring the payments and say 182 countries are liable to pay them, including the United States.

Somehow, these UN knuckleheads want to look at ancient history instead of the fact that in recent years, sub-Saharan Africans have been held in slavery in some Muslim countries including Libya.  However, they do not look at too ancient a history like the many slaves the ancient Romans took in various parts of their empire.  Since they took German slaves, should modern people of German descent be entitled to reparations from Italy?

Slavery ended in the US over 150 years ago.  There is no one now alive who was either a slave or a slave owner.  How could one now possibly figure out who is a descendent of a  slave and who is not?  The 1860 census showed many thousands of free blacks in the South.  Indeed, that census shows more free blacks in the South than in the North.  It also shows that quite a few of those free blacks owned slaves themselves.  So if one's ancestor was a free black who owned slaves, would they be entitled to "reparations" for slavery according to the UN?  It would appear so.

Maybe it is past time to just cut off our funding for the UN freak show.
