Election pact between traditional right and populist right in Spain helps goal of beating Socialists | Eastern NC Now

avoiding the divisions of right as in Germany

Unlike Germany, where rivalries and a "firewall" divide the traditional right Christian Democrats from the surging populist nationalist anti-immigration right Alternativ fur Deutschland,  Spain's traditional conservative Popular Party and its populist nationalist anti-immigration right Vox Party have a much better track record of working together. They already form governing coalitions in several of Spain's provinces.

Now with the opportunity to dump the corrupt Socialists in an upcoming snap election for parliament next month looking better all the time, the Popular Party and Vox have announced an electoral pact to keep competition between them from letting the Socialists sneak through.  Both Vox and the Popular Party have announced their strategic withdrawal of candidates in Senate races where a divided vote on the right could give Socialists seats.  That will leave one on one races between the Socialists on one hand and either Vox or the Popular Party on the other.  Vox initiated the project and the Popular Party quickly agreed.

Spain's Socialist government has been hit with a series of corruption scandals, with several of their senior leaders convicted, and the prime minister's own wife now under indictment. It was a corruption scandal that brought down the Socialists in next-door Portugal a few years ago and the Socialist Party there has continued to decline since.  In recent years, Portugal has had a traditional conservative minority government supported from the outside by a populist nationalist anti-immigration party.

There is also a huge backlash to the open borders policies of Spain's Socialists which is likely to become a bigger issue due to the riots by migrants and far leftists sweeping Europe currently,  Spain has already had some rioting by the leftist / migrant groups, to which the Socialist government gave a weak response.  Communications are flying on social media, however, of major violent riots for Halloween, Oct. 31.  If the Socialists fail to crack down, they will further alienate law abiding voters but if they do, they will alienate their own base.
