Reliable source tell us there is a big shakeup going on at Flanders Filters, one of Beaufort County's largest manufacturing employers. Sources confirm that there was an employee meeting called this morning (6-27-14) and it was announced that CEO Harry Smith has been replaced by Peter Jones.

The N. C. Rural Center has come under fire as a result of a State Auditor's report that said, among other things, that the Center maintained inadequate accountability for grants it gave to businesses that were to create "new jobs."

We should be dedicating ourselves to recapturing the state and federal tax dollars that are taken away Beaufort County residents by sourcing grants from outside our community to help fund local needs and by cutting the regulatory burdens placed on local businesses.

If the old owners of the Weir plant and the new prospective buyers of that building were not in perfect agreement on the price at which the property should change hands, then it was their task, as private profit seeking parties, to negotiate until the difference could be reconciled.

We here at the Observer have contended for sometime now that care should be taken by government officials before they take risks with taxpayers' money.

Although I do not see any way to escape using state and federal grants as the most direct means of recapturing local taxes unfortunately sent to Raleigh and Washington, DC, I have strongly argued against matching grants to local businesses which are funded by additional burdens on local taxpayers.

Somebody made a terrible business decision. And it is going to cost the taxpayers of Beaufort County $111,141.61 and an equal amount for those in the City of Washington.

I want to add my thanks for Bob Huets to that of Delma Blinson. Bob has done a great job in moving us one step closer to ending the disaster that the EDC has created with the industrial parks.

At their regular monthly meeting on March 11, 2013 the Beaufort County Commissioners voted to approve a complex business deal to get rid of the infamous Blue Goose and reward the three companies involved with incentives to create 54 new jobs.

As I look at the Blue Goose wheeling and dealing that seems to be going on, I get a little suspicious that some of the "Good Ol boys" are about to pull another one over on the long suffering taxpayers.
