I wonder why the video of the April 15th School Board meeting is still not up. If it happens to be posted before next week, people better check the audio. Remember the meeting when the Aurora pastors spoke and the audio was erased for their part of it?

I think you have definitely hit on something here. I read in the paper where Superintendent Cheeseman is quoted as saying Beaufort County Schools will host community forums on the closure of S.W. Snowden Elementary. At the forum last night, Board Member Hickman read the NC General statute that said the local board of education must provide the public hearings in these situations. That is an important distinction. It certainly does seem like the tail is wagging the dog.

It seems to me that of the 19 or so questions being asked, all except 2 should be seriously considered. Many of us know that even though Dr. Horton drives in from out of town, she is working very hard for the school. Same with board member Hickman who is a resident of the area. He is the only board member that regularly shows up at Snowden School.

Other than that, I guess I'm most aware of question number eight. I do think the community is wondering about the county support of the school when they go long periods of time without a custodian and heating and air conditioning problems in the middle school extending over the course of two school years. In fact, I've heard that Dr. Horton has recently been on her hands and knees scrubbing the hallways of the entire school. I also know that Mr. Hickman has brought some of his own fans for the CTE Lab after these known problems have not been addressed.

With the school staff and local volunteers receiving so little support from the county office, parents must be wondering just how committed Beaufort County is to their community.

"Target of Politically Expedient Closure?" looks like a real serious possibility. If it was not wouldn't the school system be trying to inspire the confidence of parents instead of doing just the opposite? Then read the WDN front page article of late. Clearly, some of Beaufort County's elected officials are not advocates of community schools. A few of our elected officials do support the community schools. We need to support them.

I have been hearing all sorts of stories about how all this has come about, and I figured there was some exaggeration going on, but I checked the video, and I checked the minutes. Sure enough, Don Shreve made the motion, and Daniel Hudson seconded the motion to tentatively close Snowden School.

Tillis, like his master McConnell, can be counted on to take the Red Chinese position over what is best for our own country.

What have we learned in all of this?
1) Republican majorities don't mean diddly squat. We hear lots of talk, but when it comes right down to it, there's just a bunch of self-serving actions. Republicans. Democrats. Just different wings on the same bird.
2) Community schools are an endangered species. I still know people mad about John A. Wilkinson. Now Snowden is in the crosshairs.

As an interested observer, I've made some phone calls to see how all of this is going. By an overwhelming margin, it appears that only certain people are receiving any party notices. Looks like conservatives are screwed again.

It seems like the tone of things is still anti native, anti-conservative and exclusive. I just don't see these control freaks sharing anything.

It looks like the county insider elitist are making every effort to undue the results of the latest Beaufort County Republican Convention. These folks view the grassroots as people to follow orders, write checks, and keep quiet. My advice to executive committee members is to bring your own refreshments.

After being an exclusive party for so long, it will be interesting to see if they can win back the confidence of conservatives and natives.

WS: You bring up some wonderful points. Your reference to Superintendent of Beaufort County Schools in South Carolina brought back memories. I remember when Jeff Moss was Superintendent of Beaufort County Schools in North Carolina. Some of our long-term board members have a real talent for questionable hiring practices.

For those of you who do not know, the battle for southeastern Beaufort County is going on at this moment. Who will come to their aid? Save Snowden School.

People are making a good point about Garrison chumming up with Ms. Forrest. It doesn't seem likely that Garrison is such a Snowden advocate when his party mentor supports the Superintendent in all things. His misrelating the facts in the Snowden situation is nothing but a dishonest campaign ploy and part of a larger scheme to rid the board of a board member not afraid to say no to the Superintendent. Mr. Hickman is not a yes man and that is a problem to some of these people.

Further, I've found that Ms. Forrest lives on the north side of the river in School District 5. Why is she meddling in School District 2 on the south side of the river. Ah, but Stacey Davis represents District 5. I seem to remember Forrest as a Republican official playing dirty in her race too. There should have been party action against Forrest in that episode, but as far as I know there wasn't. Anybody seeing a pattern here?

That explains a lot. Reminds me of something I heard awhile back. Some of the out in the county people that were volunteering for the Washington municipal elections had an interesting encounter with this person that was then an officer of the local Republican Party. She was holding forth about how something had to be done about the three newly elected Republicans on the school board in 2022. Unbeknownst to her some of the listeners lived in Hickman's district. One of them told her they supported the new members. At that point she stormed of in a huff. Evidently, Ms. Forrest has issues with conservatives. I hear she is also close with the superintendent. Looks like the RINOs found a yes man prospect for the superintendent.

I happen to know that Charles Hickman is the only school board member that even goes to Snowden. This Garrison dude is spreading false information.

The more I consider that $500,000 four-acre land purchase the more it sticks in my craw. Also, the county paid $10,000,000 to get that "free" education lottery building money. I wonder how many schools we could save with $10,000,000. Jeff makes a great point. It's a very bad look indeed.

I can't disagree with any of your "What is wrong with us items," but I wonder if people will come together enough to address them. Oftentimes, there are more of us drowning in apathy, consumed in factionalized hatred, or obsessed with greed, to make any real community gains. We all need to get our priorities straight.

The superintendent and staff are slow walking this issue and the board majority is content with that. The board gives it five ho hums.

I never did understand that gender assigned at birth phrase. So, these whackos think that woke parents actually have the right to assign the gender of their newborns, no matter their biological sex at birth, and with no regard as to what their children will eventually think about it as they grow up. This is sick as well as evil.

Those paying attention have noticed that the public is held at arms-length from this board. I get the feeling that community members are only welcome as cheerleaders or such.

It seems to me that if the BCS upper staff can't get their rainbow flag decorated social studies curriculum they will just take their marbles and quit. The entrenched board members so opposed to looking at a Hillsdale History and Civics curriculum seem to be dedicated to following the dictates of outside the county governmental departments rather than fulfilling their own board responsibilities. I noticed on the tape that they are willing to pay top dollar for the canned corporate curriculums while complaining about the cost of something like Hillsdale, which is the best deal I know of. That ridiculous argument underlines how devoted some of the board members are to the status quo. The status quo is nothing to brag about unless the goal is promoting anti-American, heavily Marxist globalist attitudes.

I do not think that this superintendent cares at all about the statutes or the board policies. As long as he has five board votes he believes he doesn't have to and can actually interpret as he pleases. Last year three board members tried to implement a superintendent evaluation. It is my understanding that they accomplished a partial evaluation after resistance from the superintendent and obscuration by the board majority.

As best as I can tell it is only in recent years that some of these things have come to light. This board operated for so long out of sight with long serving board members coasting along in their own world. I can't find anyone that even remembers ANY evaluation being done. The attempt last year just might be the only attempt in history.

It's Beaufort County's version of All in the Family. Theres the matrimonial relations between the two boards, and there are also the situations where there are school and commission board members with their offspring employed by the Beaufort County School system. Aw, I bet there is never any conflict of interest there.
Commented: Friday, March 14th, 2025 @ 4:52 am By: Van Zant
Must a struck a nerve with the matrimonial board members. It seems the appearance of impropriety is of no consequence to the commission husbands. Quite the contrary since the response is to double down.

As screwed up as the BC Commission is, at least you can tell who the board members are and who the staff members are. The lines are so blurred on the BC School Board. It's like alternate reality.

John H: I agree. If people aren't really looking, it is hard to see. I think that is why there is such a concerted effort to screen the public out of the School Board meetings and make it confusing to see and hear what is going on.

Stan: I suppose the resolution is meant for the County Commission Board. There's not much need to put it before the School Board. I'm pretty sure that, not all, but a majority of that board is totally committed to chasing that ever more expensive "free education lottery money".

Concerning the County Commission Board: I hate to be a sourpuss but I'm not too confident that those "Knockoff Republicans" that just happen to be recent Democrats are going to be inclined to vote for such a resolution. But if they did it would be very entertaining seeing if they could do it with a straight face considering the hypocrisy of it all. I could be wrong though, because it's also mighty hypocritical to sit on a Republican Executive Committee and write checks to Democrat candidates. They do that with a straight face.

Stan: Lord knows we need a DOGE movement here in Beaufort County.
Commented: Friday, March 7th, 2025 @ 9:51 pm By: Van Zant
I noticed that only one of the two newest board members voted for new board leadership. If both had voted for new leadership, it would have happened. So far it appears that the recent election has changed nothing.

Same with the board of commissioners. The recent election has put them one vote away from new leadership instead of two votes from new leadership. So, in a re-evaluation year we seem to be on track for some very real tax increases.
Commented: Friday, March 7th, 2025 @ 9:15 pm By: Van Zant
For the last two elections five new school board members have been elected. Here is what has NOT changed:
1) The Superintendent and his assistant continue to sit dead center at the side of the same Chairman.
2) Other favored members sort of flank them.
3) Board members with a history of asking hard questions seem to be strown and scattered on the fringes.
4) Visitors are seated off to the side while individual school staff members sit dead center up front in the audience.
5) Visitors have to strain to hear board business.
6) The video is poor quality and hard to follow. At key times the audio doesn't work.
7) The school board lawyer still lives in Durham County, is still Chairman of the Durham County Democrat Party, and still has his primary job in Wake County.

That's what it looks like to me, and that leads me to wonder what it will take to have a school board that will actually BE a board.

I got my property revaluation last week. Whooo! I can't see the rate being lowered enough to avoid a huge tax increase. I think I've about figured out that somebody is getting free money from me.

I think that's $10 million 500 thousand so far.

I'm really getting the impression that not much effort is being put into addressing county population trends and enrollment choices, and too much effort is being put into procuring education lottery funds for ill thought-out building projects for the consolidation of schools.
