There is an old saying in politics that "you do not piss on your base" and the German CDU seems likely to find that out the hard way if Merz persists in abandoning his most important campaign promise on illegal immigration. Exit polls showed that cracking down on illegal migration was the number one issue of German voters, outstripping the economy and inflation and far outstripping "climate change". In votes actually cast over 60^ of German voters cast their votes for parties pledging a hard line on immigration.

The CDU only has to look at the implosion of its frequent ally, the Free Democrats due to their abandonment of their hard line on immigration. In the previous German election, the Free Democrats had run on a hard line against immigration, not quite as hard as AfD but much harder than the CDU, and received almost 12% of the vote. After joining an open borders coalitino with the Social Democrats and Greens, they started getting totally wiped out in state election after state election. Although they tried to regain their footing in this national election by again taking a hard line on immigration, their voters no longer trusted them and they got a bit over 4%, crashing out of the national parliament altogether. Merz may well bring the same fate down on the CDU with the same arrogance toward German voters.

Journalism in the era of Wells was a very different thing than today. In those days, they were more like to do real journalism than today when so many in the media are propagandists rather than real journalists. Unfortunately today, so many media workers are into what they call "advocacy journalism" which is really nothing but pure propaganda. A real journalist tries to tell both sides, something their modern bretheren usually do not, at least in the US MSM. In some foreign countries, real journalism does seem to survive.

CDU leader Merz has not even waited 24 hours to sell out German voters on illegal immigration. In his campaign, he said "permanent border controls" would be "imposed on day one" which would "refuse all attempts at illegal entry". Now, in seeking a "grand coalition" with the Social Democrats, Merz has declared that "none of us is talking about border closures". Already social media is full of comments on Merz' betrayal of the German people (which is risky to do in Germany because people can be arrested for critizing politicians). europeanconservative.com

Jann: I suppose my biggest difference with Bob on things like this is that he sees Ida B. Wells-Barnett as interesting because she is black, and I see an interesting person that happens to be black. I don't think that makes me the racist.

The main difference between socialism and fascism is on how they organize the economy. Under socialism, the goal is government ownership of business. Under fascism, the goal is government control of business while leaving it technically privately owned. Fascists do that by heavy regulation and their term for that is "the corporate state". The policies of Democrats in recent years have leaned much more to the fascist model than the socialist one.

Jann- It's likely Ida would not be in the MAGA party.

Ida B-Wells-Barnett was a journalist, anti-lynching activist, women's suffragette, and an early civil rights movement leader.
