Every Picture Tells a Story ... Don't It:" Brookgreen Gardens, Part I | Eastern North Carolina Now

One oddity that I have never witnessed in all my days is this Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger), which lives in the Brookgreen Gardens. Also known as the Raccoon Squirrel or Monkey-faced Squirrel, this rodent is at least twice as large as any squirrel I have ever seen in the Coastal Plains of North and South Carolina: Above and below.      images by Stan Deatherage.

The vernacular, South Carolina Lowcountry, is best exemplified by these last two images of the former rice plantation. When we return with Every Picture Tells a Story ... Don't It:" Brookgreen Gardens, Part II, we will showcase this more natural sector of the Gardens and the forced labor that built it to profitability as a plantation: Above and below.     images by Stan Deatherage
