    John W. Jefferson, age 83, a resident of Smithtown Rd., Grimesland, NC passed away Friday, January 3, 2014.

    There will be a celebration of his life at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 6, 2014 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service, officiated by Kent Gurganus and Jason Kirkman. Special music will be provided by David Smith and Jamie Pierce. Burial will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Bonner Hollis, Earl Chandler, Randy Smith, Lou Ensley, Kenny Jones, Jimmy Stokes, Phil Woolard, and M.L. Red Dunbar will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Hwy 264 E, Washington, NC and other times at the home.

    Mr. Jefferson was born November 8, 1930 in Beaufort County, son of the late Titus and Lillie Mae Smith Jefferson. He served in the Army during the Korean War. John was a supervisor for Singer Furniture Co. where he retired after 40 years of service. He continued to stay busy as a "handyman". On June 10, 1955 he married the former Elsie Dunbar. John lived in Pitt County his entire life and was a member of Haw Branch Church of Christ and served as deacon.

    In addition to his wife, Mr. Jefferson is survived by his sons, Timothy Allen (Timmy) Jefferson of the home, and Jerry Lee Jefferson and wife Patsy of Greenville; his sister, Shirley Smith and husband Randy of Black Jack; and his grandchildren, Amy Lynn Jefferson and Jeremy Lee Jefferson and wife Brittany.

    In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Reba J. Dunbar, and brother, David Jefferson.
