    Mrs. Mildred Dail Harrell Elks, age 95, a resident of 40 Carrow Road, Chocowinity, died Friday March 28, 2014.

    A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM on Sunday March 30, 2014 at the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington officiated by Rev. James Dixon and Rev. Ronnie Gurganus. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Tavner Dixon, Daniel Elks, Stan Sparks, Holden Dixon, Jared Dixon and Jimmy Whichard will serve as pallbearers. Buddy Harrell, Otis Clark, Eugene Elks, Daniel Mayo and Jim Beasley will serve as honorary pallbearers.

    Mrs. Elks was born in Beaufort County on January 27, 1919, daughter of the late James Matthew Harrell, Sr. and Eva McRoy Harrell. She was a 1938 graduate of Chocowinity High School. On September 6, 1940, she married Arthur Lee Elks who preceded her in death on April 7, 1986. Mrs. Elks spent her life in Chocowinity helping her husband on the family farm and being a homemaker. She was a member of Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years.

    Mrs. Elks is survived by her daughter: Eva Jean Elks Dixon and husband Rev. James R. Dixon; her son: Mickey L. Elks and wife Deborah Barr Elks; her grandchildren: Tavner L. Dixon (Laurie Vernelson Dixon), Daniel L. Elks (Amanda Watson Elks); Keri Elks Sparks (Stan Sparks); her step grandchildren: Leon Woolard (Edna Woolard), Amanda Woolard and her great grandchildren: Holden Dixon, Jared Dixon, Rachael Elks, Alex Elks, Zoey Sparks and Ian Sparks all of Chocowinity. She is also survived by her sisters: Geneva Whichard and husband Warren Whichard of Chocowinity and Sally Tadlock of Elizabeth City and her brother: Frank Harrell of Lottsburg, VA.

    In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters: Kathleen Haddock, Mattie Lee Sears, Altie Mills; her brothers: Matthew Harrell, Jr., Arthur Harrell and Thomas Harrell and her great grandson: Daniel Lee Elks, Jr.

    The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home.
