Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

BCCC students and faculty have been away from campus this week enjoying Spring Break while staff members have taken the opportunity to catch up on their work while the campus is less busy than usual. We have all been preparing for the final push to graduation. Those returning next week will find some changes to the campus during their absence, including the start of work on the new BCCC walking trail. I hope you enjoy this abbreviated version of Tansey Topics.

    Croquet Training Schedule

    • Want to sharpen your croquet skills in advance of the BCCC Foundation's Cutthroat Croquet Tournament in May? Foundation Director Judy Jennette has scheduled three croquet training opportunities as follows: 1:30 to about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27, Bonner Point, in Historic Bath; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, behind Building 10, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, Behind Building 10. All of the equipment will be provided and all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Judy at 940-6326.

    Digital Sign Campaign Update

    • Judy reports that a total of $31,619 in donations and pledges have been received for the Digital Sign Campaign at BCCC. To make a donation, contact Judy at 252-940-6326.

    Gamma Beta Phi Diaper Drive

    • BCCC's Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society has extended its diaper drive until May 2. Items are being collected in Building 9 near the office of Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards and the lobby of Building 12. The items will be donated to the Carolina Pregnancy Center.

    Graduation

    • Former State Treasurer Richard Moore will deliver the commencement address at the Beaufort County Community College graduation set for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15 in the auditorium of Washington High School. Mr. Moore served two terms as State Treasurer of North Carolina where he oversaw more than $80 billion in pension funds, earning "top two" public system honors nationally during the last five years of his tenure. In June 2012, Mr. Moore was named President and Chief Executive Officer of First Bancorp, the fourth largest bank in North Carolina. He also serves on the Board of North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company and is a former trustee of Wake Forest University. I have heard Mr. Moore speak and know our graduates and their families are in for a treat!

    IM FITT Walking Trail

    • Workers broke ground this week on the IM FITT trail at BCCC this week. Its construction is funded by a $150,000 grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust as part of Healthy Places North Carolina, a long-term trust initiative to improve health and health care in rural, financial disadvantaged North Carolina counties. The trail will include fitness stations, as well as places to rest, and will be open to the public. A path through the BCCC campus will tie into existing sidewalks to complete the circuit around campus. Construction is expected to be completed ahead of schedule – for use later this year. I look forward to the BCCC family and members of the community being able to use this trail.

    John and Geneva Morgan Scholarship

    • The Beaufort County Mental Health Association has announced that it will offer an annual scholarship honoring the works of John and Geneva Morgan in the areas of mental health and community service. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in the second year of the Associate's Degree Nursing Program at BCCC. Students must live in Beaufort County and must be full time with at least a 2.5 grade point average to be eligible for the scholarship. Watch for more information about the scholarship and the Morgans in future editions of Tansey Topics and Campus Connections.

    Service Awards Cookout

    • Don't forget to RSVP for the annual Service Awards Cookout scheduled for Thursday, May 14. Please contact Theresa Edwards at 940-6217 or theresae@beaufortccc.edu no later than 5 p.m. on May 8 and let her know whether you will be attending or not able to attend.

    United Way Campaign

    • Faculty and staff this week should have received information from our Small Business Center Director Lentz Stowe about the 2014 United Way campaign along with a pledge form and a list of community partners. If you wish to contribute to the United Way through a payroll deduction, please complete the form and return it to the Human Resources Office by May 9. Those who currently participate in a payroll deduction and do not wish to make a change do not need to submit a new form. Thanks to Lentz for heading up this effort on the BCCC campus.
