    Mrs. Claudia Carawan Smithwick, age 76, a resident of Pinetown and a former resident of the Ponzer Community of Belhaven died Sunday April 27, 2014 at River Trace Nursing Center of Washington.

    A funeral service will be held 1 pm Tuesday April 29, 2014 at Mount Olive Church of Christ officiated by Russell Mann. The family will receive friends following the service at the church until 3 pm.

    Mrs. Smithwick was born in Hyde County on April 19, 1938 daughter of the late John Green "Jay" Carawan, Jr. and the late Elma Williams Carawan. She was a graduate of Hyde County Schools and dedicated her time to her family as a homemaker. Mrs. Smithwick was a member of Mount Olive Church of Christ.

    Survivors include a daughter: Gay S. Gibbs and her husband Melvin of Pinetown; five grandchildren: Andrea Pierce and her fiancé Richard Crisp, Kim Slade and her husband Garrett, Rose Smithwick, Hope Dale and Aaron Pierce; four great grandchildren: Zoe Slade, Micah Slade, J.D. Dale and Wyatt Dale and three sisters: Shirley Spencer of Morehead City, Annette Bishop of Raleigh and Linda Shaver of Raleigh. Mrs. Smithwick was predeceased by a brother: Royce Carawan.

    In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks for memorial contributions to be made to Mount Olive Church of Christ, 39353 US Hwy 264 E., Belhaven, NC 27810 or to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
