Press Release:

Raleigh, NC     Governor Pat McCrory toured Eastern North Carolina today to inspect damage caused by Friday's severe weather in Beaufort, Perquimans & Chowan counties. The governor also expressed his sorrow after an 11-month-old boy died Sunday morning from injuries he sustained Friday when a tornado touched down in Chowan County.

"All of North Carolina is grieving over the loss of such an innocent life," Governor McCrory said. "Ann and I will be praying for the family as it copes with this terrible loss."

Dozens of others were injured during Friday's storms, including a Perquimans County resident who sustained a major head injury.

The governor began the day surveying damage in Beaufort County near Chocowinity and Washington. He then traveled to Chowan County, along Burnt Mill Road near Edenton, before proceeding to Perquimans County along Chapanoke Road near Hertford.

The governor pledged state support and assistance to local officials in getting federal disaster aid to the affected communities. To that end, the governor was accompanied by Public Safety Secretary Frank Perry, Transportation Secretary Tony Tata and NC Emergency Management Director Frank Sprayberry.

More than 325 homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed by the storms in Beaufort, Perquimans County, Chowan, Pasquotank and Greene counties. Beaufort County took the brunt of the damage with 197 structures either destroyed or damaged, primarily in the Chocowinity and Whichards Beach area. Four historic structures were damaged in Edenton.

The National Weather Service said the first EF-3 tornado of 2014 occurred in Beaufort County late Friday evening. In addition to the Beaufort County storm, tornadoes produced significant damage in the Chicod area of Pitt County with a maximum EF-2 rating.

"The people in this part of the state are resilient," Governor McCrory said. "They will come back from this tragedy stronger than ever."
