Governor McCrory Announces Appointments | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh, NC     The Office of Governor Pat McCrory announced the following appointments today:

    North Carolina Historical Commission

    Chris Fonvielle Jr. (New Hanover County) – Fonvielle is an associate professor of history at UNC-Wilmington and has a great interest in American Civil War, North Carolina, Southern and Lower Cape Fear history.

    Samuel Dixon (Chowan County) – Dixon is an author and owner and partner of Dixon & Thompson Law PLLC.

    Bill Ivey (Randolph County) – Ivey has published a book on North Carolina longrifles in the Civil War. He has a great interest in Seagrove pottery, antique furniture and more.

    Millie Barbee (Ashe County) – Barbee will serve as chair. She has served as the Commission's vice chair and has had a long career as a public history professional in Beaufort and Morganton. She served on the board of trustees for the Blue Ridge Conservancy.

    Margaret Kluttz (Rowan County) – Kluttz is the chairwoman of the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation board of directors. She is the former mayor of Salisbury. She will serve as an at-large member.

    The board advises and assists the secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources and oversees the rules and regulations for acquisition, disposition, preservation and use of materials of historical, archaeological, architectural or other cultural value. The term length is six years.

    Historic Murfreesboro Commission

    James Moore (Montgomery County) – Moore is the vice president of the Montgomery County Historical Society. He is a reappointment to the commission.

    Brenda Watson (Northampton County) – Watson is the site manager at the Murfreesboro Historical Association Inc. She is a reappointment to the commission.

    John Woodard (Northampton County) – Woodard is the president of the Murfreesboro Historical Association. He is a reappointment to the commission.

    Marjorie Way (New Hanover County) – Way is a retired school principal and owner of the George Little House. Way is a reappointment to the commission.

    Dorothy Shoffner (Avery County) – Shoffner is a historian and a native of Murfreesboro.

    Betty Mann (Hampton County in Va.) – Mann is a speech pathologist at Hampton County Schools.

    The commission acquires, preserves and restores historic properties in Murfreesboro. Each member serves a five-year term.

    Edenton Historical Commission

    Cordelia Tyler (Chowan County) – Tyler worked as a systems engineer for IBM. Her family is involved in the collection of antiques, North Carolina architecture and historical preservation in Edenton.

    Richard Hilbert (Chowan County) – Hilbert is the deputy director of the International Defense Mapping Agency.

    Thomas Credle (Chowan County) – Credle retired as a consultant in 2011, having spent much of his career in emergency management at the state and federal level.

    William Chesson (Chowan County) – Chesson is the president at Infinity Prepaid Communications.

    Tommy Wood (Chowan County) - Wood is a retired attorney and owner of Mulberry Hill Manor in Edenton.

    The commission effects and encourages preservation, restoration and appropriate presentation of the town of Edenton and Chowan County as a historic, educational and aesthetic place. Members serve at the pleasure of the governor.

    The Honorable Matthew Peeler (Perquimans County) – Peeler is serving his first term as a county commissioner, where he serves on the Economic Development Commission, among other committees.

    Mary Cassidy (Pasquotank County) – Cassidy is the owner and founder of Cassidy Consulting.

    Bruce Biggs (Pasquotank County) – Biggs is owner and president of Biggs Pontiac Buick Cadillac GMC Truck in Elizabeth City, NC. As a community leader, he is an active member of the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry.

    Donald Herr (Chowan County) – Herr is retired, having held management positions with AT&T and Campbell Soup Company, among others.

    John Woodard Jr. (Pasquotank County) – Woodard has more than 44 years of experience in all lines of insurance claims, with an extensive knowledge of residential and commercial construction and damage estimating.

    The commission was created to facilitate economic development and tourism development in Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington counties. The term length is two years. The commission will come to an end June 30, 2014.
