Press Release:

High Point, NC - Governor Pat McCrory, Department of Cultural Resources Secretary Susan Kluttz and Doug Bassett, chairman of the High Point Market Authority, dedicated a state historical marker today on South Main Street alongside the historical Furniture exposition hall building that was built in 1921. The marker recognizes the importance of the High Point Furniture Market and its value to North Carolina.

"For more than a century, North Carolina has been a key player in the furniture industry – both nationally and internationally – and this new marker will be a constant reminder to how important furniture production is here in the Triad and across our state," said Governor McCrory. "Not only is this a great reminder of our state's heritage, it is a reminder that the furniture industry will continue to be an important element of North Carolina's economic recovery."

The High Point Furniture Market was nominated for this honor by Alex Stoesen, a retired history teacher at Guilford College. The High Point Market is the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, bringing more than 75,000 people to High Point every six months. It is comprised of 180 buildings and has over 11 million square feet of show space.

The N.C. Department of Transportation and N.C. Department of Cultural Resources have worked together on the historical marker program since 1935.
