News Release:

Raleigh, N.C. – Following the news of the death of Joyce Pope, State Budget Director Art Pope's mother, Governor Pat McCrory released the following statement:

"North Carolina has lost the bedrock of a family that has given so much to this state in terms of philanthropy, leadership and civic engagement," said Governor McCrory. "Her compassion and strength was an example to many, including her son Art, who endured this very difficult time with dignity. His resilience in service to the people of North Carolina during her illness is a fitting tribute to the legacy Joyce Pope has left us all."

Joyce Pope passed away Wednesday afternoon in Raleigh. She had always had a strong passion for the Raleigh community and had been an advocate for the arts. She established an endowment for the Raleigh Fine Arts Society, a local group created in 1965 to strengthen and encourage art, music and literature in the Raleigh community. She also created a scholarship fund at Performance Edge, a performing arts training program for young adults, and was instrumental in supporting the North Carolina Symphony and Carolina Ballet.
