Mr. Louis Wilkinson Martin, Sr., age 89, passed peacefully in his sleep on Thursday morning May 22, 2014 and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Mr. Louis Wilkinson Martin, Sr., age 89, passed peacefully in his sleep on Thursday morning May 22, 2014 and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM on Sunday May 25, 2014 at the First Free Will Baptist Church, Ninth and Bonner Streets, Washington with Pastor Todd Parrish officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Cleve Boyd, Eddie Congleton, Greg Latham, Elwood Ingalls, Travis Sadler and Gene Paul Edwards will serve as pallbearers.

    Louis was born on June 5, 1924, the eldest of three children born to Hosea Wilkinson Martin, Jr. of Leechville and Lydia Golden Cutler Martin of Camp Leach. He was a 1943 graduate of Washington High School and a WWII veteran serving in the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Washington and served for more than 25 years as Chief Usher. Louis retired from Texas Gulf Sulfur Company in Aurora, now PCS. He was a charter member of the Washington Rescue Squad and a 50 year member of the Red Men Lodge. His favorite activities included: spending time with his family, church, bible reading, fishing and watching classic cowboy movies.

    Louis is survived by his wife, Charley Luendia (Lou) Crisp Martin of the home and son, Louis Wilkinson (Marty) Martin, Jr. (Ladale); his sister, Dorothy Frances Martin Miller of Palm Beach, FL, his brother, Ronald Wayne Martin of Belhaven and three grandchildren: Stephanie Lynn Martin Dixon (Bill), Wesley Wilkinson Martin, Sr. (Charlene) and Jason Shane Martin. He is also survived by six great grandchildren: Marion Joshua Allen, Olivia Ashlynn Baker, Wesley Wilkinson Martin, Jr. (USAF), Sophia Elizabeth Martin, Ashlynn Sloan Martin and Hannah Rose Dixon; two great-great grandsons: Marion Malachi Allen and Matthew Shane Toler and many nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends 6:30 – 8:00 PM on Saturday at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home located at 722 East 9th Street.

    Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made to First Free Will Baptist Church, Missionary Fund, 901 North Bonner Street, Washington, NC 27889.
